I don't want to be cocky, but... 2 years ago

...this is way too easy for me. I love music and I happen to remember the lyrics of all the songs that I love listening to. There are too many to think of now, but I will list them eventually!

It isn't that hard to do... 3 years ago

1. Anouk – “Mood Indigo”
2. Anouk – “Time Is a Jailer”
3. Fragma – “You Are Alive”
4. Fragma – “Toca’s Miracle
5. Silverchair – “Ana’s Song”
6. Saving Jane – “Who’s Crying Now?”
7. Bush – “Glycerine”
8. Bush – “Greedy Fly”
9. Bree Sharp – “Show Me”
10. BreeSharp – “Guttermouth”

And many, many, many more…

Not by conscious effort, though, and WAY more than 10! 3 years ago

Oh, so many reasons! To entertain yourself; to sing in the shower or while cooking; to occasionally find someone else who knows the same song and to sing it together word for word to the amazement of any others around (I sang Joni Mitchell’s “Twisted” word-for-word with the director of a conference center to the astonishment of those around us… have no idea how we even GOT there). And, to sing softly in the ear of your boyfriend (or girlfriend) when appropriate … (“Darlin’ Companion” by the Lovin’ Spoonful; “Dontcha Feel My Leg,” don’t know who wrote it but Maria Muldaur covered it).

And, to psyche yourself up (Johnny Mercer’s “Glow Worm” and “Ac-cent-tuate the positive”, Aretha’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T, “You Gotta Be”; Keb Mo’s “You Can Love Yourself”).

And to tap into your unconscious… when a song is going through my mind I pay attention to what it is, figuring it’s like a love note from one part of me to another, or a message, or telegram… like a dream. I mean, is it “Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair” (South Pacific) or “Shelter from the Storm” (Bob Dylan)?

And to “feel good about feeling bad” which is the tremendous power of singing the blues! Mose Allison… ah me.

Bonnie Raitt’s music, which I have loved since her first album came out, back in… geeesh… 1966? 67? ... I was 15 or 16 at the time… taken as a whole, you can find some song or other that serves every single reason and purpose listed above. Hence, her photo here.

Oh, by all means, learn songs by heart!

Song Ten: "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" Johnny Mercer 3 years ago

You’ve got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mister In-Between

You’ve got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene

(To illustrate his last remark
Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark
What did they do
Just when everything looked so dark)

Man, they said we better
Accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mister In-Between
No, do not mess with Mister In-Between
Do you hear me, hmm?

(Oh, listen to me children and-a you will hear
About the elininatin’ of the negative
And the accent on the positive)
And gather ‘round me children if you’re willin’
And sit tight while I start reviewin’
The attitude of doin’ right

(You’ve gotta accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mister In-Between)

You’ve got to spread joy (up to the maximum)
Bring gloom (down) down to the minimum
Otherwise (otherwise) pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene

To illustrate (well illustrate) my last remark (you got the floor)
Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark
What did they say (what did they say)
Say when everything looked so dark

Man, they said we better
Accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mister In-Between
No! Don’t mess with Mister In-Between
