It’s a bad habbit I want to get rid of! I hate myself constantly using disfluencies(

    :’(
I’m beginning to think I cannot do this.
My mouth’s new habit is filling every pause in conversation with “but, um” when I don’t have any more thoughts to follow.

    It’s obnoxious.

Avoiding and eliminating 3 years ago

I’m an English major, and it sounds so ignorant to include “uh,” “you know,” and other disfluencies in my speech. It’s more than just annoying, because I don’t realize that I’m doing this most of the time.

Feel like this goal is too vauge. 3 years ago

    So it’s getting put away.

The rest of the day I'm going to consciously attempt to avoid these. 4 years ago

It’ll be practise for next week, where I avoid them all week to accomplish this goal.

I told my sister what I was doing... 4 years ago

so while I’m visiting her, hopefully she can help me.

This also has to do with your confidence in yourself.

    "Like" 4 years ago

I say Like and You know a lot. People listen to you more and you listen to yourself more when you cut out these annoying distractions. Your dialoge becomes more movie-like, which is always a bonus.

They are just fear words, put in to distract from the awkardness we feel at silence. Let the silence be… it actually makes words have more meaning.

    uh, yeah 4 years ago

Some of these might be unavoidable. However, there is no reason whatsoever to begin or end a sentence with them. I don’t know why I do this. You already know what you’re going to say, dude, all you have to do is not introduce it with an “uh”

This will be Goal 1: Get out of the habit of sticking that “uh” at the beginning of everything you say.
After getting that out of the way, we can move on to the, uh, more advanced stuff
