More "How I Did It" stories
How I did it: I became interested in Japanese when I was young, and only decided to pursue my interest when I became older. When I was thirteen I began reading up on how to learn the language, and watching movies without subtitles to pick up the gist of what I could. When I went to live in Japan, I was able to complete my knowledge of the language. Read how I did it…

i already speak english and irish and im learning french… so im practically there! i have to actually follow through with this!!
I’ve started learning Japanese.
I’m not really sure why – it was a bit of a spur-of-the-moment decision. Japanese wasn’t even on the shortlist of languages I wanted to tackle. But here I am.
Now, I don’t expect to become fluent anytime soon. I’m starting from zero, and I’ve got a long way to go. But it’s something – I always said I wasn’t doing anything about this goal because I didn’t know where to start. I’ve started.

Need to get Rosetta Stone or similar software. There’s one for the Nintendo DS, why not.
Been studying Spanish for years, but not there yet. I know I must alot more time to this, and achieve it. Therefore, my goal of fluency in another language becomes more easily attainable.
learning French & SPanish…..i already speak english..so that would be THREE! :D

....my german studies got interupted over the summer by personal events, so i wound up registering for 5 ct hrs of BOTH German and Hebrew !
i’ve found them both so fascinatingm but languages are taught so differently than they were at UC ten years back. No grammar / verb conjucation drills, all the homework is thru CDRoms, and much more emphasis on listening & comprehension…learning words and phrases as a child would. Its been tougher to do well for me…
Thus, thought i’d compile a list of all the languages i’ve taken classes in so far. Not fluent yet; Italian still tops the list of the language i want to go further in learning….
(in order of first studied)
- Spanish
- French
- Latin
- Italian
- German
- Hebrew
strange…it feels like there’s been more than that. I guess i’ve dabbled around with learning japanese kanji and gaelic words, along with lots of freelance study of etymology and linguistics…now just to work some Sanskrit studies in there…

I want to learn French! I have just returned from Paris and had many embarassing stilted conversations! I would dearly love to be able to speak to people in their own language when in their country.
gettinglost off to start a new life in LA!!!
And, I do. I’m over half-way there. I’ve got it pretty well down. I can’t tell you how much going to Spanish-speaking countries helped me with the language. For those of you considering immersing yourselves to help complete your goals- IMMERSION WORKS!
I’m back in Spanish 1 at my university- both looking for an easy A, and making for absolute concrete certain that I’ve got Spanish…that I’ve got it in my head. I’m going up to Spanish 4 and Conversation…and then taking French. French and Irish are my next two languages.
After that, I hope for Russian, Danish, or Hungarian.
We’ll see.
