I got to ride an elephant in Nepal last December! It was great!
We saw rhino as well…thank goodness no tigers!
How I did it: As part of my journey to Nepal I traveled through the mountains and the jungle ~ While sitting on the elephant it was quite surprising how high up you are...and how "bumpy" it is too! We were sitting high atop the trees on her back and the trees and bushes were so thick that the elephant would move them out of the way with her trunk! I kept thinking I would get whacked with one of those branches once she let go, but our guide made sure we were safe. The guides "drive" the elephants using their bare feet behind the elephant's ear...they use different pushes and pokes to communicate the direction the elephant should go. Elephants sense danger and a few times during the safari the elephant stopped and made low vibrational noises that we could not hear, but we could feel through our entire bodies...it was exciting and frightening at the same time!
Lessons & tips: Just go for it! And make sure you keep an eye on the branches ahead of you! Also, go with the movement of the elephant....kind of a different motion on your back!

My son and I rode an elephant while visiting a zoo. It was pretty neat. The elephants are cool.
