I’ve had a mixture of good and bad Valentine’s Days in the past but this year I had the best Valentine’s Day ever.
No I wasn’t in a relationship, no I didn’t go out on a date, no I didn’t buy or make a card, no I didn’t give anything to anyone in particular… It was so much better than all of that.
I made about 100 heart shaped sugar cookies with pink and red sugar on top of them and distributed them to everyone in my classes, random people in my university, some of my professors, some of the staff at university, and in general anyone who I thought would like one and anyone who asked for one. Seeing how happy this made people, such a simple act that made so many people happy and took so little effort made this the best Valentine’s Day ever. I can’t even count the number of people who told me that I made their Valentine’s Day, or thanked me profusely, or lit up like they had just won the lottery when I offered them a cookie, or something else along those lines.
While I’m sure it was worth more than normal to everyone because I’m in Spain and it’s hard to get the comforts of home here, and people are often thousands of miles from their loved ones, their friends, and their families, and so many other reasons, I’ve decided that in the future I’ll do the same thing because it made so many people so incredibly happy (myself included, probably most of all) and while still celebrating the idea of love and happiness it’s not discriminating against singles or couples and isn’t cheapening what should be a wonderful holiday like roses/chocolates/expensive meals out/hallmark cards are.
I suggest anyone that reads this try it sometime, whether or not you’re in a relationship, and even whether or not it’s a special day at all, I’ve brought in cookies since then and while it may not be as special, it’s still wonderful and makes people happy. As the quote goes “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.”
