On Sunday, at the boot sale we always go to, I met a woman who was selling her homemade jams and jellies. She’d just started her small business, and since they were only 1 quid apiece, I bought 5. We chatted for a bit, and she seemed really nice and friendly. She said that she wouldn’t be a regular at the boot sale, so I asked for her number for when I wanted to buy more. We said goodbye to she and her husband and small baby, and walked on.
Well, we’ve eaten the jam all week and it’s FANTASTIC. I gave her a call to tell her that and invite her over for lunch sometime, but I ended up having to leave a message on their answerphone. I have no idea whether she’ll call back or not, or whether I was too forward (and American, natch), but I wanted to take a chance anyway. Although it would be such a minor thing in the states, I’ve come to realize that here in the U.K. it’s just not done. After getting shot down so many times over the last four years I usually don’t bother anymore…I’m not sure why I tried again this time.
