How I did it: I got great advice from pet store and slowly stocked my tank. I do partial (20%) tank empties about every 3 weeks. I have slowly stocked and have yet to have a fish die on me. Read how I did it…

So I changed my 55 gal tank to a pair of koi. I really like them. I probably should add some plants, but I’m not totally sure about that.
I can’t decide what to do with my 30 gal tank.

The 6 hygrophilia plants I ordered from LiveAquaria.com all died :(. The other plants in the tank are still doing well. So, I’m thinking the shipment sat outside in the heat too long since I wasn’t home to get the order. I called the company up and they are sending a replacement shipment free of charge. So, hopefully, this batch of plants will hold up. Tonight after running class, I’m adding some mollies to the tank, cleaning the glass of algae and placing an order to restock all my supplies of CO2 packets, filters, sponges, food, etc.

Tonight I added 6 female guppies, 2 golden male guppies and 6 more neon tetras. The tank is really looking nice now. I plan on adding some mollies to give more activity to the tank.

All,
Ok, the tank is starting to look pretty good. I put some Val in and yesterday my shipment from Live Aquaria (a side company of drsfosterandsmith.com, which is excellent for supplies) came with my hygro since I couldn’t find it in any local aquarium stores. This is the first time I have used this company for plants and granted I did have to pay alittle more due to shipping. However, the plants I received were so much better in size and quality then what I was previously able to get in my aquarium stores. I added 10 blue neons, 6 female guppies and 2 male guppies. Now its time to add some mollies to the tank and a few more guppies. I’ll add pictures soon, but the tank is really starting to look good.

Ok, I started the plant revival by adding cabomba and now just need to add hydro and val to densely plant the tank. I did add 5 black phantom tetras to the tank. Therefore bringing the black tetra count up to 6 since there was still one sole survivor during the catfish reign. The tank now has almost 30 fish in the tank and 30 plants.

Today, I called the pet store to ensure that they would take back my 6 inch polka dotted pim catfish and give me store credit. Which they did, so the catfish has a chance to reside in someone else’s tank. So, I carefully cornered it and caught it in two nets before placing it in an Igloo cooler for its journey to the pet shop. The owner gave me $6 (1/4 of the sale price) in store credit, which I used to buy new heater clip mounts. I then went to Pet Smart and got 6 gold sailfins and 6 red mickey platys and 2 foreground plants. I also reattached the CO2 canisters and verified all food feeders were filled.
So, the tank restoration has begun! Next up adding more plants to this flooded North American riverbed stream 55 gallon tank.

I’m going to start over with my tank since my poka dot pim cat has grown to be HUGE and keeps eating my smaller fish and tearing up my plants. I found a local aquarium that will take him back and give me store credit.
So, I’m just trying to get the water levels under control now so I can get rid of the catfish and start a new “flooded North American Riverbed Stream” tank.

ugh…
so the water should be basically cycled…i just need to test it for a bit longer to make sure…i need to replace the filter…the blue one…i don’t remember what it is called at the moment…but whatever it needs to be replaced…
more importantly…i bought a new fish…a little female betta…she is a pale pale pink (almost white) with daaarrrrk red fins…beautiful…but when i got her home i realized that she had a bloated swim bladder…i have tried fasting but she isnt getting better…so i soaked her in a epsom salt bath and used some antifungal/antibacterial drops…i sure hope she pulls through…
EDIT.. So my new little fishie jumped out of her bowl and dried up while I was out. Geez.

I got some pretty little gemstones to mix in with the gravel last week…yay!!
Okay so this paycheck I hope to buy the other tests that I need and a heater…Then the next paycheck I can buy the divider and some decorations…The water should be completely cycled by then and safe for my aquatic friends…I can always buy more decorations as time goes by as long as they have a couple of things to hide inside/under/behind…hopefully this goal will be completed within the next six weeks…hopefully…keep your fingers crossed!!
