I have travelled most of the Lewis & Clark Trail for about 6 plus years. I did this driving a truck cross-country. It starts north of East St. Louis, Illinois & go on through Portland, Oregon. I lived in Sioux City, Iowa which is on the Missouri River & the expedition had its 1st death due to illness. In Missouri if you travel Interstate 70 you will follow the trail, or be near the trail & the river. After you arrive in Kansas City the trail turns north & follows I-29 to Sioux City & as soon as you get into South Dakota the trail goes west onto U.S. highways & state roads; which are roads less travelled. Then the river turns north & goes into North Dakota & west into Montana. All the way to Great Falls, Montana you will travel a lot of empty roads & highways. The Dakotas can be very boring & 1/2 of Montana. But, from Great Falls west to Oregon is very beautiful esp. over Lola Pass on the Montana/ Idaho line. If anyone decides to do this on a boat the Dakotas & Montana has a lot of dams. It will be differcult to do it on water. I did this on roads, but would love to do it on water. I have a dream to build a houseboat in Louisiana & travel the Mississippi River & Missouri River. That would be great. Also the Amazon River which has no dams in Brazil or Peru. Anyone interested! Suggestions?
