Finally finished my HTPC. I decided to not go the Linux route simply because I wanted the best hardware now which isn’t supported yet. Hopefully later I will switch to Linux. I’m using Vista Home, which is surprisingly better than I expected (especially with the bad press).
I highly recommend the Antec Fusion case. I’m extremely pleased with it. Great layout, very very quiet.
I’ve had two strange problems with Vista Media Center PVR:
1) for 2 days it was recording video without the sound. I rebooted the computer and it worked again
2) Some movies on some stations must have digital rights management because the screen gets blurred out on playback.
Trying to narrow down the hardware. Want to do this with Linux (either MythTV or LinuxMCE) and a virtually silent HTPC case. MUST HAVE: PVR, streamable Netflix movies in 5.1 surround sound, gaming emulation, Music Media center. WOULD LIKE: to control everything via the Wii Remote.
Built it as a project over a year ago:
Mini ITX board: 250 GB drive. Windows xp professional with Meedio for a “front end”. Use a 8 inch touch screen for interface. Currently holds around 20 of the kids movies as well as our entire music collection (around 1,000 albums). Plays through the TV of course. I do not use it as a receiver for TV and do not use it as a PVR. Could easily do so by adding a TV card though.
The box is made by Morex and is only a bit bigger than a text book. Virtually silent, looks like the rest of my system and we no longer have all those cd’s in the way.

T was gone for the weekend. I decided to geek out, and go round 2 with knoppmyth. This time with the new capture card. I initally had some issues getting it installed, finnally settling on automatic install. I’m still in the same situation as before, when attempting to play it locks up. It appears that it isn’t configured properly for my video card, or my box doesn’t have enough ‘juice’ to display tv. wierd since the card does all the compression / decoding. I’m thinking it might be time to give in, and test the windows based software for this…
Very frustrating.

Wintv-350 pimp.
Early christmas gift. I’m psyched. I haven’t installed it yet, but I will be very soon. Hopefully I’ll have a working htpc by the end of the week.

The xbox 360 can act as a client to a windows media center pc. Acting as a multiroom dvr. That’s cool. All the more reason to get my htpc setup…

Failure with mythtv has been sorta crushing. I really wanted to do this without buying any hardware, without spending too much money. At this point I’m not sure what I want to do. I have a few choices. I could buy a capture card ($150) that would work, assuming the card is the real problem. I’d still have only a semi functional system, but… I’m now second guessing why I want this.
I think it would be great to have a file / print / media server. That could burn cd / dvds, rip mp3’s, maybe act as a dvr, but I’m not sure that’s necessary at this point…
