And the winner is... 7 months ago

I am accepting Rose Bruford’s offer and I am sure that I will be very happy there. The teaching staff are of a very high calibre and recent graduates are well represented and of course, working.

I am sure the next 3years are just going to fly by!

My first YES 9 months ago

I got into ALRA. I am still in a state of shock. And drunk. I will write more later. But yes, I got into drama school. I still have recalls to get through and 2 first round auditions to go but I have definitely got into at least one drama school! I rock! I freaking rock!

Bit of a bummer, this goal is going to be on pause for a year, since it turns out most of the 2nd round auditions are during my university finals – NOT conducive to a successful audition, however much more exciting it would be than sitting in a stuffy room trying to remember stuff I probably never knew about English Literature. So the plan is to move to London after exams, get a job, get fit, read and prepare properly, and then audition for entry in 2010. When I’ll be 24. Argh. At least this way I’m maximising my chances of success, although on the flipside it’ll be 10 times more devastating if I don’t get in.

As a side-note, another book I got in the last couple of months, First Steps Towards an Acting Career by Nigel Rideout. I got it online from voicesource.co.uk, and whilst there’s quite a lot of ‘useful contacts’ padding in the 2nd half considering the cost (£12.99), the 1st section is brilliant for really questioning your commitment and readiness for the task ahead. Honestly, I do not work as a publishing marketeer on the sly, I just want to share the reading love! I’m not some Hermione Granger who thinks that everything is achievable through reading, but it at least makes me feel like I’m doing something whilst on this crappy interim year.

Books, yipeeee! 14 months ago

Just got my 2 books from Amazon in the post today. They look really useful, particularly the 100 Exercises to Get You into Drama School – perhaps the title is a little confident, but it’s got a week by week programme, which I think will be invaluable for getting back into the swing of acting. Looks like it’s got some great stuff to build vocal and physical skills which I’m sure I’ll be rusty on at the moment. So yes, going to spend a nice afternoon with a cup of tea and my books, and feel like I’m doing something for the ‘cause’. Up the cause!

I’ve got a mountain of things I ought to be doing for my degree, but thinking about the possibilities for the year ahead is just sooo much more exciting. * smack hand * Funny how working towards one goal somewhat knocks of course the others (e.g. work 6 hours a day and not procrastinate, ahem). Anyway, some steps I’ve taken so far:

- Printed off list of NCDT accredited courses and got a general idea of where I would apply this year, and where next year if unsuccessful. Also have general idea of deadlines for applications.
- Emailed old school for contact details of drama teacher: no response yet >:(
- Started summarising my acting experience (erk, nothing recent)
- Started reading Classical Audition Speeches for Women by Jean Marlow.
- Ordered from Amazon Actor’s Guide to Auditions and Interviews by Margo Annett and 100 Exercises to Get You into Drama School: Improve Your Acting and Audition Skills by Jona Howl. Hopefully the latter in particular will be really useful.
- Devised some exercise goals to get active, fit, and hopefully a bit toned again. I know (or at least I hope I know), they’re not judging you on what you look like, but it can’t hurt to be more physically in tune with myself, and to have a bit more stamina and energy. As an added bonus I reckon it’ll boost my confidence and break up my university work too.

So that’s all for now. Next targets are:
- Ring school for drama teacher contact details.
- Start thinking thoughtfully about potential audition pieces.
- Craft acting experience into a coherent and convincing statement (which will require dredging up some dates from my poor battered memory).

Anyone else in the same boat, let me know, I’m really feeling my way in the dark here. On the plus side, I think I’ll get a real sense of doing something by and for myself. Had a real ‘Rocky’ moment on the trampette earlier. Haha, I am such a loser.
