I’ve messed around with a lot of MMORPGs (most free, just because I can’t afford it) including Ragnarok Online, FlyFF, Rappelz, Shaiya and Perfect World (as well as a bunch of others I don’t really care to remember right now). So far, Perfect World and Rappelz are at the top of my ‘favorites’ list, but neither is really all that satisfying to me. So halfway recently I decided that it would be really great to create that ‘perfect’ game that has everything I think an MMO should have and more. Not to mention I’ve had just about every game I’ve ever played compared to WoW (which I have never played and I don’t think it looks very impressive at all) so it would be even better if I could make something that whenever it gets compared to WoW it would be only that it’s better.

Now if only I knew something about programming… my school doesn’t have any good computer classes so it seems like I’m stuck until I can get into a technical school or something.

Check it out, for all you MMO designers and developers! http://www.mmodesigner.com

I am known as Ricket there, the Wiki admin and frequent forum poster. I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Also, in response to redhelix666’s comment (7 months ago!), it would not be a good idea to make a flash MMORPG but it might be possible. I actually think RuneScape’s graphics are pretty good. I don’t like the cartoonish look of WoW (and WoW is BORING!) but RuneScape is just… normal. Sure, it’s a bit pixelated and low-detail, but who cares? The gameplay is awesome, and the graphics do not hinder gameplay.

is there any way to make a mmorpg without using java??? 3 years ago

no offense to java but its not the most beautiful programming code and its graphics are frustating. is there anyway to use Flash for an mmorpg??? if they had made runescape with flash animation i imagine it would be incredible, or at least more ergonomically/visually appealing…

help me!!!!!!!!!!! 3 years ago

can someone tell me how to work java?

This is a big dream for me. 3 years ago

I’m not just in it because “I think games are cool”

I’ve always liked creating worlds and this is a great medium for it.

I need to learn Java first, then c++ (runescape.com done in java),

Who else is serious about this,
and knows what it takes?

In planning/pre-alpha stage... 3 years ago

I’m planning, and sorta starting work on a text-based MMORPG. I’m using PHP with MySQL for most of it, but I intend to use some javascript as well.

As for the whole “team” concept… this whole thing is a one-man project. The only team I’ll have is some testers. If you really know you’re stuff, you don’t need a development team.

Hey,

I’ve started my game. I am the programmer and one of the main designers of my MMORPG. Except my MMORPG is just a plan that me and a couple friends have (we’re in high school, hoping we can finish a prototype by the end of high school lol). We have a private wiki FULL of designs, mainly lists of things and detailed explanations, and we have discussed nearly every aspect. We also have a graph of the landscape, and we are slowly adding building markers and other items of interest. I am learning DirectX, in preparation for making tools and the game itself, and I have also got to learn Windows Sockets 2…

Anyway, I got the idea to create my own MMORPG from playing RuneScape. I learned RuneScape from top to bottom and discovered everything about how it works, even looked at decompiled source and played around with private servers. This led to my discovery of the 3D engine, and I did plenty of research on the ins and outs of graphics techniques. I have progressed through a variety of computer languages, from HTML to JavaScript to PHP to Java to C++ and so on, with some little things in between like the TI-83+ interpreted language (a lot of fun in a boring class at school, hehe). So now I need to actually start working on the MMORPG.

If you haven’t heard of it, I am also working on another smaller project that I call Magbor. I guess it is more like a MORPG, because it will never be anything massive unless the internet progresses to lightspeed and infinite server bandwidth (which will probably happen within 20 years!) but it’s my small experiment, written in some complex JavaScript and PHP (the complex part is the JavaScript, the PHP is quite simple). I have released it on SourceForge, so if you’d like to go see it, its project page is at http://sf.net/projects/magbor

Anyway, wish me luck as I embark on this journey, and I wish you the same.

P.S. We are in need of an artist. If anyone here is good at 2D and 3D art, please let me know.

an MMORPG 4 years ago

I have been wanting to make an MMORPG for quite some time but do not know where to start. I can make some sprites but do not know how to code the game. I am trying to figure out how to do it. Does anyone want to join me with making one?
