The process so far has been:
-Being observant to word-of-mouth, and help-wanted signs.
-Decoding the help wanted ads in the newspaper by calling, or doing reverse phone number searches to find out the company name, and eventually passing over the ad if it doesn’t say what the job is. I’ve been learning what abbreviations are what, what phrases tend to come with additional info. on the phone or in person as a side note, at the last minute and learning that if a job wants money out of you upfront it’s not a good sign.
-I’ve pushed myself to make additional contact with phone calls, follow-up phone calls, applications, or e-mailed resumes, to then mail follow-up e-mails and through correspondence have learned that occasionally none of that mattered and they still needed paper records.
-I’ve managed to get myself about seven job interviews:
Mister Money USA
Payday Loans
Olan-Mills Photography Studio
Lane Bryant
Four Seasons (two interviewers)
Planned Parenthood
Turning Point Residential Treatment Centers (group interview-two other interviewees)
I’m getting good practice with answering interview questions on the spot. I pretty much look good on paper and have always been able to at least get my foot in the door. In the past, I’ve acted my way through job interviews and later on bosses of the past have said that I’ve appeared more confident in that one hour job interview than I have in the months that I’ve worked there.
I’ve been trying to change this. When I did smiled a lot, it got me farther than any other job interview. I’ve also been trying to communicate positive qualities around being slow, methodical, detail-oriented, friendly and inquisitive.
