Managua may be famous for its lakes and volcanoes, but don’t forget about its poets. Nicaragua has an amazing poetry movement, which is largely led by women. I went there to learn more about it. And when you’re there you understand why poetry is so popular in that country. It’s a poem itself.
How to visit Nicaragua
How I did it: We flew Delta from Atlanta to Managua. Our friends picked us up and then we drove to Granada. We stayed in a private home, but there are many hostels and hotels there.
Lessons & tips: Don't go alone if you are female. Definitely fly into Managua. Be careful driving (they blame gringos for everything). Budget about $40 for a hotel each night, and an American meal at a local restaurant will cost $10-20. Nica food is much cheaper, plan on $5-$10 (not including alcohol).
Resources: Delta, Lonely Planet, Rosetta Stone.

The volcanoes in Lake Nicaragua and Managua are incredible. The people are wonderful. I’d go back in a minute.

I went for 2 weeks only. It was a great trip. i got to see a live volcano, work briefly with ill children and adults, and made some great friends. We went to non-tourist areas, and I got to see some amazing scenery. This trip spurred most of my international volunteering when I realized on it that 2 weeks of bumping around the countryside handing out Asprin was not doing much to help people in developing countries.
Beautiful country, beautiful people. Heres a photo of the market to inspire others.

Nicaragua is an amazing country! I went there for a two weeks stay a few years ago, and it was really wonderful, such friendly people and beautiful nature.
but Allah is the Best of Planners. Ours have never panned out. My husband has been twice without me! Now he’s hoping we can go in December inshaAllah, but I don’t know if I can do it.
