llielso many feels

About this book. I’m reading it next year for a Russian Literature class so I figured really why not read it now. But DANG its gigantic, this translation I have its about 986 pages or something along those lines. I still am in disagreement with my brain about whether it was longer than necessary to make the points that it did. So without any other guidance from teachers/friends/the interwebs, I’ll say I liked

  • Portrayal of characters and ‘types’ of people to the point at which I could connect those types to what I’ve seen in real life or get genuinely frustrated at them because I’d seen people acting that way before (read: Anna. UGH.)
  • Religious, personal relations and political themes (themes, woo! English teacher voice!)
  • Occasionally the writing style.
  • Maybe? How it ended. Even though it seemed like it had two endings.
Not a fan of…
  • Clearly good writing style lost in translation.
  • Ridiculous length. I MEAN REALLY.
  • Infuriating bits of extra information. 10 months ago

Received a Kindle for my birthday and the first thing I did was download Anna Karenina. Took me a little while to get in to it and I have to admit, I found it a little daunting when it showed me that I’d only read 17% (and it felt like I’d been reading for AGES!!!) but eventually got into it and having that percentage tracker is a lot more exciting now that it’s at 94%.
The only problem I had was after my brother had been playing with the kindle and lost my page. He tried to leave it on the right page – as he said “I left in on the page where the Russian name said something serious to the other Russian name” but unfortunately that describes pretty much the whole story… 13 months ago

llielOfficially!

I’m officially over half way through Anna K. I feel a little silly saying so, when I started this goal so long ago. But I haven’t been taking it to college with me (the book is massive and just won’t fit in my luggage), so it’s been slow going.

That said, it’s a fantastic book and I’ll be finishing it this summer (starting May 5th!) for sure. My brain is fuzzing over, so goodnight for reals now :) 14 months ago

llielA little over

One eighth of the way there. Having break has given me way more time to complete this goal, and I have to say it’s a completely fascinating book. There’s so many characters to keep track of, but it’s lovely when a translated version of a book retains the beauty of language so well. The first thing I will do when I’m proficient enough in Russian is read classics like this in the original language. 18 months ago
