As soon as I added this to my goals list a perfect opportunity to help me complete this goal arose for me. They are now offering Chinese lessons for free in my building and I am going to take them.

What have I learned today? 5 months ago

Race is merely a term of skin colour. There are no biological differences between races it is merely cultral. I learned that in my anthropology class.

I also learned what polymath means.

What have I accomplised so far?

Not a lot…

I have a high school diploma, and one semester of university under my belt. I know how to ride a bike and swim fairly well. I learned about choirs and singing. I know how to read some music. I know how to sew but I suck at it. I know a lot about tea. I know a lot about wine but I can always use more knowledge on that. I know a bit about anatomy but I can always improve on that. I speak raed and write 3 languages and I can always learn more. I know about farming but I can always improve my knowledge on that as well. I know how to drive. I know how to cook, and clean. Although I’m always up for learning new ways to cook. I know how to bake and broil etc. I know how to handle money although I’m always up for advice on that one. I know how to do laundry. I know a little about environmental science, physics, psychology, biology, math (I know the basics) anthropology, art history, economics, english litterature and developing countries. But I can ALWAYS increase my knowledge in those as well.

Not bad for a 19 year old eh?

I was always into a variety of different disciplines and, at university, this really cam through. You can see my polymath exploits and read an in-depth article on contemporary polymathy in my portfolio: http://www.timothy-clark.com/portfolio

You never hear it used :D

I need to learn how to read a Barometer 13 months ago

I looks like a low reading, like when the Santa Ana winds blow through, is my trigger. Stress is the other one :(
I concur with these gals completely

I live at the beach so my altitude is about 90 ft. The reading right now is 29.90 in. which is exactly 1 atmosphere. The readings range from 28-31.

So is 28 or 31 a higher pressure reading?

We do have to be careful opening some carbonated bottles because they do bubble over from the pressure change of where they were filled vs. here at the beach.
Sometimes my ears even ‘pop’ when I drive from inland over the hill back home to the beach…ok you can call it flying the way I drive ;)

I'm so well rounded 14 months ago

that I’m interested in comic book AND cars AND movies.
And when the come together things get really exciting!

Cars

Berta and I were disappointed to see that the Munsters car was not on the list. It was in a drag race after all! The Beverly Hillbilly’s Car did not at least get some sort of mention. It did serve as a killer open air U-Haul with Granny on top as Queen of all she surveyed.
Damn she was feisty! I loved her!

Edit-Oh yea we also were very surprised that the Cruella DeVil car was not on the list.
Whenever I see an old touring car I have to break out in song ‘Cruella DeVil, Cruella DeVil’

Thoughts from a few years ago... 14 months ago

I want to create a mind that is disciplined, capable of sustained argument, steeped in the best ideas, and constantly generating new ones. I want to join the conversation of the ages and spend my life in the pursuit of knowledge.

My strongest character traits center on learning and curiosity. There is nothing I enjoy more than applying my brain to difficult tasks and learning about the world around me in intricate detail. I feel charged to use this gift in the service of my society.

I want to spend many hours over the next years immersed in the best ideas of the past two-thousand years. I want to use my mind in a synthetic way, adding original ideas to the conversation. I’d like to become a popularizer of science and philosophy. I don’t think the joy of investigating the world should be held captive by rich old white men. I love museums, libraries, gardens, and science centers and I want to help build more of them.

I plan on pursuing education to the highest level I can manage over the course of my life. I want to earn at least one advanced degree in the social sciences or the humanities. I can see myself writing prolifically. I plan to spend many hours shaping my ideas and feelings into prose. I want to develop a rigorous, poetic writing style and use it to explore the nooks and crevices of the mind and of nature.

I will always approach my work with the spirit of an explorer. I will try my best to use my skills of analysis and observation to improve my work every day. I will work eagerly in my field, taking great care with my work, and treating it as a trust. I will always search for intellectual possibilities in my daily work and nurture my curious nature.

I want to take on major learning projects and stick with them until they bear fruit. I will attempt to master bodies of knowledge in a systematic, but passionate way. I will start, perhaps, with the analytic tradition in Western philosophy and work my way back to the ancients. Can I read everything? I will try, working my way through hundreds of major works of literature, philosophy, drama, and poetry over the course of my lifetime. I will then weave what I’ve learn into my interactions with my students, with my professional audience, and with the public. I will learn because I LOVE to learn. I will learn for the joy of mastering new ideas. I will learn for the exhilaration of scaling intellectual mountains, to stand and look out across the world.

...from USE MY GIFTS of intelligence and curiosity to serve others

I would like to come up with a working definition of “polymath” so I’ll have a standard to judge by. How will I know if I’m approaching this goal? I know it’s a long journey, more than a destination, but wouldn’t it be fun to work out how I would be different when I have traveled far along that road? Maybe I could pick paragons, people who lived this virtue to an extraordinary degree, and write about the kind of people they were. I’m thinking of a Rene Descartes or a Richard Feynman. Any thoughts on paragon nominations?

Analyzing this goal 14 months ago

Learn one field (psychology and neuroscience) well enough to teach it at the graduate level.

  1. Get a Ph.D
  2. Spend ten years immersed in the field

Learn five fields well enough to teach them at the undergraduate level

Evolutionary biology, philosophy, the martial arts, music theory, and the history of jazz
  1. Organize the information
  2. Find authoritative overviews of the field. Reduce them to one sheet of paper.
  3. Read twenty books on each topic
  4. Make speeches about the topics to interested people (rotary club, volunteer teaching)
  5. Work as a tutor to test my knowledge

I found a cool new Polymath 18 months ago

I know of Stephen Fry from his work as narrator of audiobooks of the Harry Potter books. I used to have the kids listen to them in the car on our long drives (20 min each way) back and forth to Catholic School before the were too young to read them and the films were not out yet.(of course my ev-m-il said that they were the “gateway to the devil” :P)
The fact that he is friends with Rowan Atkinson aka Mr.Bean and was the best man at his wedding just makes him that much cooler in MY book :D

The way that I came across this info I was watching MTV tres Cribs and Robbie Williams came on. Well I have no clue who this cute little goofball is? So I looked him up on Wiki and he was in the documentary that Fry did on Manic/Depression. I saw that he has done all sorts of things! When I glanced back up it said Polymath :) I showed McSmarty that is one of my goals.
He said,”What is a Polysex?”
I Googled it for the perv. It’s basically a swinger.

My first guess would have been the tragedy of a baby born with both male and female sex organs. I was pretty sure the proper term was hermaphrodite for that
