Driving to Carlsbad Caverns from SoCal was one of my very first solo road trips. I had an awesome time! In addition to the excitement of the drive and the caves, I was also meeting up with an online friend.

But back to the caves. It’s a totally surreal world, unlike anything you see… well, on the surface. haha

Seeing photos is one thing, but being surrounded by it, together with the cold air and high humudity, is another.

We took a tour of the Slaughter Cave, which is a wild cave with no railings or lighting. At a couple places, we all turned our lights off and got quiet. It was the most jarring quiet I’ve ever experienced.

The only drawback is that it’s in a rather secluded part of NM, and highway 62 in TX isn’t exactly scenic. But still, well worth going.

Off the beaten track but an unforgettable experience 3 years ago

I was completely enthralled to see Carlsbad Caverns. Talk about an amazing experience! Be prepared for the intense heat in the outdoors in the summertime, but also for the cooler air in the caves. My only regret is that we were only there for one day and missed the bats emerging from the caves in the evening. Call ahead or check on the internet for information about what time to be there. Apparently the bats are very predictable! :)

It’s so beautiful. The caves outside of the main cave (Particularly Slaughter Canyon) are alot of fun, because they aren’t as crowded. Spring for the special latern tours, and the restricted areas if you can. They are DEFINITLEY worth it! I’ve been several times (I only live a half -day’s drive away) and am going again this winter, with my boyfriend. It’s best to go in winter, because there is less people and the hotels are cheaper, but you don’t see the bats, which is kind of lame. But, I like it with less people. It’s easier to enjoy.

Wow. These caverns are HUGE. 4 years ago

I was surprised by their size! We walked for hours and took dozens of stunning pictures (i’ll post shortly). If you are ever near New Mexico, made this a definite visit. And if you are a camera buff; pack your tripod for dramatic photographs.
