It has become clear in retrospect that the origin and inspiration of The Secret was the work of Jerry & Esther Hicks and the collaborative set of non-physical beings known as “Abraham.” The portions of the film that included them was edited out, thereby contributing very ironically to the suppression of the “secret” that the filmmakers consciously separate themselves from but substantially reproduce (wittingly or unwittingly). In other words, The Secret is actually a dumbing down of the true nature of the Law of Attraction, meant for viral marketing and yet missing the most vital piece of information possible – that humans and indeed planet earth as a whole, in all its diversity, are Source Energy. You might take a look at a video called The Secret Behind the Secret, available in small part at YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFp-iPSPplE and also on DVD.
Personally, I believe humans can handle the full extent of the Law of Attraction, the reality of non-physical beings, the notions of Well-Being and Source Energy – all elaborately explained in Hicks/Abraham’s The Law of Attraction – and do not need the pseudo-spiritual version propagated in The Secret. Your phrase “circular reasoning” is quite on the mark, as is your reference to Stepford-like phenomena. The Hicks’ book is quite a fascinating read, and truly remarkable are the podcasts (which are also free: hayhouse.com > itunes), where it is abundantly clear that Esther Hicks channels a highly intelligent, caring and indeed super humorous Guide. You really have to hear it to believe it – it will send shivers down your backbone, as The Who used to say. :>

“Many more tragic things will come about because of your automobiles today, and there is no legislation about putting them in the garage. And yet, an equal and fair legislation would be about that. Let’s garage all cars and save our people.”

“The greatest gift that you could ever give to another is your own happiness, for when you are in a state of joy, happiness, or appreciation, you are fully connected to the Stream of pure, positive Source Energy that is truly who you are. And when you are in that state of connection, anything or anyone that you are holding as your object of attention benefits from your attention.”

source energy

Excellent experience lying in bed listening through iTunes to the latest podcasts of Esther Hicks & Abraham. You have to hear it to believe it – the voice of a collective and superior intelligence coming through the mouthpiece of this wonderful woman. There are also some excellent clips from The Secret Behind the Secret on YouTube. I’m also through chapter 12 of the book Ask and It is Given.
It becomes clear that people can handle the truth of non-physical beings and source energy; they don’t need to be talked down to or have the secret which is not a secret hidden from them as if they were in some special hierarchical movie ratings system. We are ready to be reminded of our origin our bliss and our buddha nature. We are ready to shed our resistance, our neuroses and our protectiveness. The message of Abraham is not so different from that of a compassionate writer like Pema Chödron, nor from the teachings of Rudolf Steiner.
There is something entirely brilliant in the idea of the town-hall style meetings that spread this message into the seams of conservative communities and wake up the dozing masses to the luminous possibilities in their very thoughts. Making the mind an ally, as Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche says, indeed. Finally, a new age for the masses that comes from one of the highest possible locations in the spiritual world and speaks through a humble couple.
The so called United States are granted this blessing in an era where their leaders threaten to collapse the country by catastrophic wars, military spending, a health system in collapse, general insanity in government and corporate “leadership”, openly flaunted brutality and the systematic repealing of civic and human rights, not to mention infrastructural and economic demise. One episode directly addresses the barriers which serve to compel instances of the feared events, intrusions. That which is excised by fear reappears closer than ever. That which is welcomed becomes good.
Also, the multiplicity of human beings is addressed, in a way that resembles the work of Deleuze & Guattari.
I would be curious how Abraham would explicate the ideas of karma and human evolution.
