The machine lost it’s 74 Gb U160 SCSI HDD (it was blue screening with a “Error:0xA”, under Win2k3, SP2, x86), so I removed it and put in an 18 Gb Ultra160 SCSI HDD. I think it was the cheap-ass connector that I was using; it’s an SCA drive connected to an Adaptec 39160 PCI-X. It may have been to blame since I did notice that it was synchronizing at 40 instead of 160, an obvious sign that something wasn’t right, although it could have been a bad drive too.
In any case, these things are small, ancient, inefficient and ultimately irrelevant- so I got a 320 Gb SATAII HDD today. The mainboard has 6 ports with an Intel ICHR7 RAID controller. More modern, yes. Still need to migrate the data though. So I’m not there yet.

the machine is now at my place.. but it’s currently trying to put a 500 Gb SATA RAID1 back online. afterwards, i’ll put some sharepoint on the image and see what happens. i still need to get my own RAID going, perhpas a few 400 Gb SATAII disks so I can move my data off of a few 120 and 80 Gb disks. I need to put something together and let it ride…

Machine is built and working in someone else’s environment. At least it’s being used for the moment. When it is done, I’ll bring it back and re-do it.

I can replace both of these machines (1 Ghz, 1 Gb RAM each) with only one (3.0 Ghz Core duo, 4 Gb RAM) and have more room in my kitchen. plus the disk access performance will be improved. Of course I am the only user on the domain, but it’s nice to not have wait for data…

so far, so good – i’ve got the OS installed and the mail package in place, and i’ve migrated my personal mail and tweaked configuration on the old mail server so that mail continues to flow. of course, i went to bed at 1 in the morning, then got up again and worked until 1:30 because of having forgotten something critical.
time to test this a bit before eventually moving C’s mail. i think i’ll try migrating a mailing list remotely today. :)
