Music for the mind, music for the soul, music for the joy 1 week ago

Reconnect with my deep love of music. I developed a love of music when my sister spoke with the band director about me before school ended in May. Very quickly I was walking home from grade school with a tuba around my neck and body! I put it in my clubhouse deep in our backyard. The “clubhouse” was actually an old chicken shack with remnants of army boxes and the occasional feather. I had to make another trip to the band hall to get the stand, but I got it. This is how my introduction to music began. I had all summer to practice scales and read sheet music in bass clef. I think I probably had an occasional meeting with the band director that summer, but I’m not clear on that. I know it got pretty warm in that old chicken shack by July. I was accepted into the band the following September. I was in the 8th grade. I marched without playing in the first football half-time of the season! This initial experience was my launching pad to classical music. The band had two seasons of the year – marching band during football season and concert band after football season was over until the school year ended.

I’ve been wanting to listen to and discover new music. I’ve discovered I really like Modest Mouse when I didn’t care for them much years ago. So I’ve been grooving to that. Youtube is amazing for discovering new bands and seeing various footage of bands you like that gives you a new perspective. For example I’ve seen studio takes of the Dead Kennedy’s who I used to listen to a lot as a teen. Seeing them play in the studio with a high quality recording made me realize how good they actually were.

So I’m on a Modest Mouse kick right now but need to keep looking and discovering new stuff. iTunes and the public library are my sources. Once I discover new music I need to make it a point to listen to it often!

Today I listened to a CD I’d got but not heard before.

Music, I love it 2 months ago

Today listened to several songs on PC and downloaded some, it’s really better than just being in silence.

Plus while listening to music, I started to think about Halloween songs and Halloween in general. I know it’s still early yet (bit under 2 months), but if I start earlier I can plan, but don’t have to worry about not having enough time. Basically, it’s better to start thinking before late October and then feel like I have to rush it all!

It’s amazing how a melody & words can change someone’s life. it’s medicine. it’s like the most amazing thing ever. I wish i could express more, but I’m all choked up… So, I’ll just leave it @ this.

train ride 3 months ago

I took the train from Chicago to Ann Arbor on Sunday, and ran out of reading material over the course of my five hour ride. So that left me with music to listen to.

I listened to a bunch of my favorite songs first, but then I started to dive into albums that I somehow acquired but never listened to. It was very nice. I even brought my iPod into work today, a habit I had gotten out of because I like to hear the conversation around me.

It sounds funny, but sometimes I think I’m afraid to listen to new music because I fear change. This is a very comfortable way to deal with that fear.

Listened to quite a bit – listening to new CD I got (The Stills) right now. Been listening to some songs that were in the Donnie Darko movie that I’ve got into (“Echo & The Bunnymen – The Killing Moon”, “The Church – Under The Milky Way” and “Tears For Fears – Head Over Heels” are all brilliant), and I’ve also listened to quite a few random songs that are on the computer.
