My mom has been looking for chihuahua puppies for ages now, but puppies in Ontario are expensive, and here in KY (for anyone reading my entries for the first time – hi to my new subscriber!! :D) where my husband and I are visiting, they are more reasonably priced, so my mom asked me to find a puppy for her while we’re here.
I did find puppies for my mom, and she decided she wants TWO! So last night my hubby and I went out to drop off a deposit on the pups. (We can’t pick them up until the 14th of this month.)
While there, the friendly breeder and I were talking and I told her about Dog Show Crud. She had never heard of it either, but hopefully if any of her puppies ever get it, she’ll remember what it is.

Almost every dog lover, and pretty much every animal lover, has heard of parvo. It is the kind of word that sends shudders through owners hearts. The ravages of parvo are bad enough that 15 years after your first case of it, it’s like it happened yesterday.
Awhile back, my mom, who has been breeding happy, healthy pug, beagle and puggle puppies for 10 years now, noticed that some of the pups in her litter weren’t as perky as normal. Telling herself she’d check throughout the day on their condition, she returned only hours later to find dead and dying puppies.
Then another breeder had a similar thing happen to an entire litter. And another breeder. And another!
Before long, it was nearly an epidemic. Our trusted and true vets told us it was a “new strain” of parvo, because autopsies showed low positive for parvo.
As word gets around in circles of likeminded people, the term “dog show crud” got back to us from a breederthat a friend of a friend knew.
My mom went online and found that this seemingly benign sounding illness is horrifically deadly and can kill in literally hours. What is a healthy happy pup in the morning can be dead in the afternoon.
Exacerbating the problem is that because parvo tests register low positive, vets who are confronted with Dog Show Crud often refuse to believe that what they are faced with ISN’T parvo, and treat it as such.
And I don’t know about you, but the average person can’t afford thousands of dollars in vet bills for something as deadly as parvo, with the slim chance that MAYBE their dog, pup or puppies will pull through.
Dog Show Crud IS NOT PARVO. Please learn more about this illness, and spread the word to others before they are faced with the decision to put their dog to sleep… or spend thousands on a procedure which does more harm than good.
The more we know, the better the chances of eliminating this sickness!
