Get a Sirius Satellite Radio

Alas, it turns out that there's no point in my getting a Sirius 19 months ago

I’d wanted the portable player for use during my workday, when we’re strongly discouraged from listening to Internet radio because the bandwidth requirements (assuming a significant number of the firm’s 3000 Canadian employees might be doing this at any given moment) would slow down our network.

However, I sit in a cubicle, well away from any windows. The nice young fellow at the store today explained that I almost certainly wouldn’t be able to receive the satellite radio signal in such a setup. (I love stores where the salespeople aren’t on commission.)

So I treated myself to an MP3 player instead. Not that I need that at work, because I’ve got most of my favourite CDs loaded on my office computer. (No bandwidth problems are caused by listening to them.) But I figure I can load the MP3 player with my Spanish lessons, and get in some studying as I travel via streetcar to and from the office.

And anyway, I was already in the electronics store, and I was just plain in the mood to celebrate spring and my upcoming return to work with a modest little splurge. I did a bit of drooling over the 40” HD TVs, but managed to avoid plunking down a couple of grand to assuage my Sirius-radio disappointment. :-D

I did this under extreme duress, at least originally.

I like commercial radio. If I’m driving at night, I love to flip on the AM dial and just see what is out there.

But, my wife got Sirius for her car, and I got hooked on it. So, my in-laws gave me a receiver and subscription for Christmas.

Now, I’ve gotten used to listening to old episodes of Jack Benny when I drive into work in the morning, the tail end of Howard Stern on tape delay when I drive home at night, and BBC Radio 1 and Little Steven’s Underground Garage at all the times in-between . . .

Have decided to make this a reward for completing my current challenge goal... 2 years ago

...and actually joining a gym.

Of course, if I don’t complete the challenge on time, I’ll still pay the “consequence” I’ve set for myself (i.e., donate a substantial sum to a cause I’d rather not support).

But I figure it can’t hurt to do a bit of motivational double-dipping here, by promising myself a carrot, not merely threatening myself with a stick.

May decide to wait a bit on this one... 2 years ago

...because although I definitely decluttered more than enough to earn a nice reward, I overshot the buy-a-bed budget by a considerable margin.

Meanwhile, I have Internet radio and digital radio stations on my TV at home, and CDs at work.

This will be one of my rewards... 2 years ago

...for making progress on decluttering my apartment next week.

My birthday is the following week, and I expect to feel deserving of a very nice birthday present to myself.

HOWARD! 2 years ago

so so good plus punk channel, 90s alternative, bluegrass, Lime (organic living).. the comedy channel is good and there are even old-timey radio shows. you could give up your TV w/ all the music & content they have.

Worth doing cuz Tim loves it..and I like that I bought him something he truly enjoys..not worth it cuz the guy is always horny..he listens to Howard, Maxim and the Playboy channel all day!..no wonder I can’t get any sleep at night! lol.

I will never listen to regular radio again. I know that XM might currently have more subscribers, but once Stern moves to Sirius, it will just be out of control. I don’t think that XM can survive hurricane Howard. If you are thinking of getting Satellite radio, I would definate go for Sirius.

For me, it is all about the Underground Garage! The most amazing station!
