How I did it: I went to school to become an esthetician, but realized i really am better at makeup, but with the license in esthetics and my skill with dramatic and natural makeup, i got the job at M.A.C.!!! it took me 4 interviews to get the job, but it was sooooo worth it!......and i also realize that going to different art shows and fashion events, you will meet so many people and get lots of offers to do makeup on the side, and because of those opportunities , i have lots of experience in all different types of work....weddings, photoshoots, theatrical, etc..... Lessons & tips: Always use the professional brushes , M.A.C has some of the best...they are handmade and nickel plated, they last forever....the best basic brushes to get from mac are brushes #187, 129, 239, 224, 217 and 266....you should be able to do most of your makeup with these.....Another tip is, always you a pink based concealer for under the eyes, this will help with dark circles, never use a yellow base...go to mac and get the "NW" type , for the pink based, and this goes for any skin color....last but not least, always use a primer or base under your eyeshadows, this helps with the intensity of the color and makes it long lasting! Nobody loves creasing! Resources: Having a esthetician's license helped me get the job at mac, but as far as being a makeup artist goes, i have networked with so many photographers by just putting together a portfolio and displaying my work online...I would have never thought years ago, that would have had the opportunity to do some of the stuff that i have done to this day...i have gotten the chance to work on so many amazing photoshoots, fashion shows, etc...I even did makeup for some of America's Next Top Models! |

I passed my course.
So now I’m Trying to build up my confidence and skills before i start charging people so right now im working for free.
Did a photo shoot for Vidal Sassoon and a fashion show last week.
I think i could have done better at the photo shoot i think…but im always going to be critical on my work, im still learning.
Did it.

I work in a boring office job which is not me at all. I went to college and majored in art, i went to cosmetology school and now I’m working in insurance??? Where did i go wrong? I love make up, I love playing with color…it’s like painting on your face! I’m hoping I will be able to get a job at MAC…that is my goal for now

At the moment i work behind a desk programming websites.
Theres not much room for creative scope in my job and you don’t get to meet new people.
Working and meeting and new people plus making them look and feel good about themselves would make my days feel more rewarding then what I’m doing now. Plus you get to work for yourself.
The trouble is where do i start.

I am new to this forum, I really like the idea of writing down your goals! I have always had a passion for art and expressing yourself. I have been playing around with make-up and painting my whole life. I never actually thought about the idea of being a make-up artist until I walked into a MAC counter and one of the girls was telling me how great they were to work for. She was really enouraging and believed in me. I really have a passion for it- its just getting my foot in the door somewhere.
