It is good to be specific about the things you want in your life. How else are you going to move towards them?

Some of my goals 3 years ago

sound so contrite, like prayers and promises you send up to heaven when trying to convince God that you’ll be good. I really need to stop adding too many goals that are from other people’s lists and that are too general and long term.

My 43things list is only useful to me if it’s really personal and specific and authentic and achievable.

The best lists I’ve seen on this website are the ones that are really personal and specific which tells you so much about that person. There are some generic goals that in the long term are good, like drink more water, but if you break it down and make it more personal it’s also more achievable. Like starting off with drink two glasses of water a day, and then slowly increase the amount as it becomes a habit. It’s all about finding the best way to work with yourself to achieve your goals. If you know that you’re just not inclined to do something, then either start off small and go slowly or change the goal completely.

Well, now I need to take my own advice and revamp some of my goals that apply.

on many of my goals have changed and I’ve been moving more and more into the ‘I give up’ category. This could be de-motivating but I actually feel as if I’m not pressuring myself anymore. I’ve left the ones that are:

    more short term
I have more motivation to complete
    more achievable
    less stressful
    dreams

    More adjustments 3 years ago

I’ve ‘given up on’ some of the goals that were listed here. It feels a little bit deflating to do this rather than delete them but I wanted to keep some of them there to refer to later on and re-instate at a later date if I wanted to. So my ‘given up’ page should really be my ‘put on hold’ page. Having said that, why doesn’t 43things.com allow this as an option? It would be great to be able to put goals on hold and maybe re-instate them later. Maybe I’ll suggest it to them.

I was going to mark this goal as done but... 3 years ago

I decided to keep it up to remind me to keep doing it.

    Specificity 3 years ago

I’ve reshuffled my Things by deleting some, modifying others and adding a couple of new ones.

I find that there is great power in being specific, especially about your goals. It’s kind of like writing or saying positive affirmations because there develops a shift in your thinking that leans towards the more positive.

I want to see my 43 Things page move and shift as I tick off the goals achieved and so I’ve made a lot of the entries more specific instead of the broad goals I had before which would take a lifetime to complete and would forever be sitting on the list.

I learnt some time ago that huge tasks are better tackled when you break them down into smaller chunks.

making an end point 4 years ago

I think I need to go through my goals and make them all have an end. An identifiable point at which I can say “I’ve reached this goal”.

So, my aim with this goal is to go through all of my previous goals and make them finite.
