I took a couple of evening courses in jewellery making and really enjoyed it. I’d like to continue making jewellery but at the moment I am only able to read and write about it and sketch out ideas (at the moment I can’t afford to buy tools and don’t have a space to work). Each week I set aside some time to do some reading/writing and I’m hoping that when I move I’ll be able to get some simple tools and resume making stuff. I’d also like to try some beading, as the only tool I’d really need is pliers.
How to make jewellery
How I did it: I've always had an urge to be creative but I can't draw or paint or anything like that. I love jewellery, especially earrings and last October I decided to have a go at making my own and discovered to my delight that I can create wonderful things. It has really helped me to fulfil my creative urges and I now have a wonderful supply of earrings especially. People like the things they see me wearing so much that they have started to ask me to make things for them. It's also great for individual Christmas and Birthday presents and so much better for your waistline than chocolate at Easter.
Getting started involved a little expense, buying tools and supplies etc but there are some good deals to be had and a huge variety of tools and beads etc on ebay. As I started in the months before Christmas and decided to make lots of presents I found that the initial cost was offset by the money I saved by making presents instead of buying them.
There are lots of sterling silver findings available which enabled me to make good quality jewellery for less than I could buy it. There are also lots of semi-precious beads available.
Lessons & tips: There are books and magazines available that will provide you with ideas but more importantly techniques. You will also find that some sellers on ebay provide instructions with diagrams on line - really useful when you are trying to make your first earrings or necklace!
It's also useful to know that "gold filled" means that the item is better quality than i.e. contains more gold than "gold plated" and therefore is less likely to wear off.
Resources: Guides that can be found on ebay.

I’ve made lots of different styles of earrings and am loving it. I love using semi precious stones and giving them to friends as presents. People seem to genuinely like them.
I plan to make many more things this year.
i am jeweller by trade i make basically everything you can manufacture there is something rewarding about making it and have someone wear it, you should all try it.
I’ve started doing this. Have all the tools and beads and am trying out new designs. It’s been fun and fulfilling. I’ve been giving lots away as presents.
should be do make jewellery without taking old jewellery apart :)
I was inspired by this [which i want ever so badly but i do not have £40 to spend on ONE necklace]:
today I took a few tools and beads to work (I was only there to wait for some workmen) and managed to almost complete a bracelet. started some earrings, got distracted and made them in completely different colours.
I’ve also made prototypes for another 3 bracelets. Now to find the time to make them up.
