So many running training plans I see, even the beginner ones, assume that you run a 10-minute mile! I’ve been trying to run for the past several years, have completed 5K’s, 10K’s, and a half marathon, but I have yet to regularly see anything close to a 10-minute mile on my Garmin GPS or treadmill readout.
That’s not to say I haven’t tried. I’ve done running clinics with hill work, tried fartleks, and have even just gone out and tried to do my regular 3 mile run at a 10:00 pace, but I end up winded and exhausted after a minute of running at that pace.
I have come back to running after having my baby last year. I started slow, as a beginner again, and have been doing 2 mi runs at around 12:40/mi. Even though I can tell I have more cardiovascular endurance, since I don’t need to take walk breaks, I still can’t seem to get to even 11:00/mi unless I’m going downhill.
Why does it seem so easy for “everyone” to do 10- or even 8-minute miles?? At this point I would trade in all my running gear to be able to do 3 miles in 30 minutes or less.
I’m not overweight, and I don’t think I am unfit. I just can’t do a 10:00/mi pace if my life depended on it. Sigh. I am hoping that patience is the key to achieving this goal.
A girl can dream.

I really want to take up running. I have 180$ running shoes and absolutely no will power, but I’ve decided that I’m going to register for the Toronto Marathon in 2009which is 25 miles. I need to start training now if that’s the case.

My Nike+ said I did this long ago as part of a longer run, 9:52. But this was a single mile in 9:58. Not too impressed. Need to set another goal once I can do this every time I run.

He used to have to trick me into running the mile. I would whine, complain, and do my best to annoy my way out of doing it. Now, I wanna do it in 10 minutes.

After months pounding the pavement and the treadmill, I finally nailed the 10 minute mile. No longer a couch potato—now an athlete. Okay, NOT an athlete yet, but I’m working on it.

Happy but slightly ticked. I thought I was going to nail it, but did 10:07 yesteday and I wasn’t even tired. If only I had pushed my self just a little more… Oh well, tomorrow. I’m going to do it tomorrow. Then it’s on to nailing the 9, 8, 7. Whew, I’m getting ahead of myself.

37 people have this goal. I had no idea. Yesterday I ran an 11 minute mile, which was the fastest I’d done. I ran a four miler race this month in 53 minutes and would love to do it next year in 40 minutes. I’m 44 years old and there were 60 year olds running that race in 40 minutes. So, I can too. Once I can run a 10 minute mile, I can run 3 miles in my 30 minute workout time instead of just two miles.
