Got Sidetracked 6 months ago

when I was injured in August, and didn’t keep up with posting.

Meanwhile, the new season started in September.

So this is being marked “done” even though it isn’t. sigh

Annual Training- July 19, 2008 11 months ago

I taught at the first training session for the 2008-09 season yesterday, which means this season is nearly over. I was pleased to see two officials who have taken a few seasons off to go to school in the class. I was also surprised to see a couple of people I know who were taking the class for the first time.

I’m going to teach at two more seminars before the end of summer.

I need to catch up on my postings for this goal before the end of August!

Games 166 - 177, June 2008 12 months ago

With out of town guests, I only had two weeks of availability. Still, I was able to fit in 12 games.

Games 151 - 165, May 2008 12 months ago

Another relatively light month- only 15 adult games.

Games 140 - 150, April 2008 12 months ago

A light month- with the youth and adult leagues winding down, and the NHL playoffs at full frenzy, I only officiated 10 adult games.

Games 133 - 139, March 9 - 18, 2008 12 months ago

Finished out March with 2 youth games (including one playoff tournament game) and 5 adult games.

Game 132: Ice Chalet Cupertino
Cupertino Cougars (home) vs. San Francisco Sabers
NorCal PeeWee B
Team: Josh M. (adult), Referee; Matt A. (teenager), & myself, Linesmen

The game prior to ours, a Squirt A game, was pretty intense, and ran over the allotted time by 10 minutes. The retiring officials said there had been 27 penalties! Apparently the Squirt A division has become highly competitive.

Our game, however, was pretty tame…

Game 131: Sharks Ice Fremont
NCWHL Maroon
Partner: Sarah H. (young adult)

A fairly easy game, which was a good thing, since both Sarah and I had overindulged at (separate) dinner.

On my first face-off, the center remarked “Nice nails!” referring to my new manicure with blood-red polish.

Games 129 & 130: Sharks Ice San Jose
SIAHL DDD/E
Partner: Matt G. (adult)

These games were both fairly easy, although one player (who is also an offical) was acting up with my partner.

Game 127: Sharks Ice San Jose
San Jose Jr. Sharks (home) vs. Vacaville Jets
NorCal Squirt B
Team: Myself, Referee; Calvin S. (youth), & Jonathan P. (youth), Linesmen

Shortly after getting home from the rink on Saturday, I received a call from the scheduler asking if I would do two games first thing in the morning. I usually don’t request early morning games, but I was offered incentive pay, so I reluctantly agreed. I’m usually not in the habit of being out in public at 7:30 am!

This game was pretty easy. One unusual thing that happened was when the home team apparently had “too many men” on the ice. Calvin, one of the linesmen, wanted to make the call (the only penalty a linesman can call). Turned out the penalty box attendant (one of the team parents) had let the player out prematurely. Since it was not the player’s fault, there was no penalty.

Game 128: Sharks Ice San Jose
San Jose Jr. Sharks (home) vs. Tri-Valley Blue Devils
NorCal Squirt A
Team: Josh M., Referee; Jonathan S. (youth), & myself, Linesmen

This Squirt A game was not as aggressive as mine had been the previous day.

As a linesman, my responsibilities are greatly reduced from those of the referee, the chief duties being to call offsides and icing. I was very, very cold during this game, so much so that I removed my whistle during play to try to warm my hands. This is something I never do, because before I knew it, the puck came flying down my end and my partner was signalling potential icing. I raised my hand to my face, in order to blow my whistle for the completed icing. But there was no whistle to blow! I searched my pockets frantically, but by the time I got my whistle, the puck had headed up the other end, again for potential icing against the other team, which I had failed to signal. So, in a weird, bass-ackwards way, it evened up.

At another point in the game, the puck was shot out of the rink and hit the back-up goalie for the home team (my previous day’s partner, Gordon’s, brother). I joked with him that he was able to make a save without even being on the ice.
