Our final W2 dropped through the letterbox on Thursday… as did a 1099 for some work I’d forgotten Joy had done.
A 1099 which dropped our refund from close to a grand to $130.
Bugger!
Oh well, it’s all filed now.
Within two weeks. Awesome feeling because this refund is large enough to just nearly wipe out the credit card debt. It probably won’t be as exhilarating next year now that I have my withholding calculated correctly. But now my savings can begin…
Taxcut released their update on Feb 15th (I checked every day…sigh) and despite some technical difficulties applying the update I finally got it working and filed both Fed and State that night.
w00t.
Now I’m just waiting for the refunds :)
Although I did more poking around (even based on some of the posts here) and found I probably could have saved my software cost AND efiling cost by doing some more research to find the big-name web based tax apps with free e-filing. oh well. next year!
I recommend TaxAct online. You can get there free from the irs.gov Web site. It lets you file state returns for more than one state, which I needed.

I’ve been using TurboTax for the Web for four or five years. It makes tax prep easy and quick. Just got our 2004 return done in about two hours. It also helped that our financial life is rather simple and hasn’t changed since last year.
Love that new Washington State sales tax deduction!
Years ago I did my taxes as soon as I received my W2 (simpler life = paper forms). Even when I first bought TaxCut, I was still very early and I always had at least a small refund in my hands pretty soon. The past couple of years I have waited until the last minute and I don’t even know why.
This year I had a suspicion I was owed a bit of money so I resolved to get them in asap. When I estimated my taxes (pre W2) using taxcut I was even more motivated :) Then I had to wait even longer for a corrected W2 (oh the pain!)
Last weekend I finally sat down with my 8 non-cash donation slips and entered in that last bit of information. Only to find that TaxCut is issuing a software update that affects non-cash donations…
...in “Mid-February”! I’ve been checking every day because it won’t let me efile without the update. This refund will wipe out 3/4 of my credit card debt so I am jonesing.
Though the rather large refund informed me that my witholding wasn’t quite right so I did correct that right away and now I have several hundred dollars more in each paycheck. Who knew?
I’ve done my taxes in February every year for the last five years, and getting it over and done with (weather paying them off, or getting the refund) is a huge relief. Plus, you get to laugh at all the suckers in line at the post office in April.
I just installed TaxCut, and took a dry-run at my taxes, entering the numbers that Microsoft Money thinks, and we’re due about $800 back. Hopefully that number’ll go up a little once I have the actual W2s in my grubby paws.
