The price of bread in Hawaii has just gotten so high that I have to consider a bread machine. A loaf of the cheapie kid bread is almost $4. Real bread is over $6. My friend that knows everything and I had a great discussion about it the other day. He has made about 100 loaves of bread with his machine in the last year. He has calculated it out to be approximately $1 per loaf, ingredients and power included. Its roughly $2 if you factor in the cost of the machine. His was $140. And he even knows how much time it takes for him to clean the machine and prepare for the next batch. He is my best friend and I am so lucky that he knows these things. Healthy bread in an unhealthy world. Seems reasonable.

We just aren’t getting this water thing right. Hard to really face.

Found out that tomorrow is World Water Day http://www.worldwaterday.org/
Also saw a great project called PlayPumps.org that put these great merry-go-round powered water pumps in places that need water. Very neat idea.

I’m following the Hokulea blogs again. They are sailing to Palmyra. Their posts describe a beautiful world of stars and moonlight, dolphins, gentle winds, strong winds, clouds in the distance, teamwork. Cool stuff.

clotheslines
My neighbor and I spend a while on the phone today discussing his clothes drying strategy. He invensted $15 in a clothesline that he has been using for the last 3 weeks. He is so wonderful because he figured out the number of human hours it takes in Kilowatts to dry clothes is about 38 human hours. He can hang and take down the clothes in 10 minutes. The issue is that we live in a really rainy place, so he has to optimize the time of day that he hangs out the clothes. We are also entering the rainy season. He says it looks like he has saved about $20 so far on the power bill since starting the project. Sustainability and energy conservation rocks and people who use wise practices are far more interesting than people who have the money to be mindless consumers.

Here is an interview with one of the makers of the new film “Flow” about the global water crisis. I wonder if it will come to Hawaii. Need to get some resouces on this so I can learn more.

I’m going to clean a beach tomorrow in observance of the international costal cleanup day. I really love doing things that are service and exercise at the same time.

Oh man, knew this was coming. It turns out all that plastic is really bad to drink from. So now I have even more incentive to drink only tap water from glasses and cups, since it isn’t stored in plastic containers. Its this chemical in the plastic that causes all kinds of problems. Its BPA and is being linked to cardiovascular disorder, diabetes, and liver problems. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/09/080916100942.htm
Nice that we can recycle the bottles, but NO.

My grandaughter has favorite plates and spoons that she likes to eat from. She’s three. They are like that. So I noticed the other day how I just took something that hadn’t cooled yet and cooled it with water from the tap! Argh.
I put a catchment bucket near my garden the other day. Maybe that can help balance the karma.
