Still-feeling a tad jet-lagged
We got a great deal on Sell-off Vacations. Eight days in an all-inclusive resort out-side Athens and air-fare included.
We didn’t stick around the resort or go on any of the organized excursions but instead rented a car, took our guide-book and hit the countryside.
Must say, I loved driving in Greece. There are no rules. No stop-signs, no speed limit (at least none that are observed), no concept of lane-dicipline. Combined with the narrow switch-back mounbtain-roads and thre lack of signage and it was really fun getting around. As a Canadian you get used to having a lot of rules – really a nice break to have to use your head and survival instinct over an orderly and sanatized Highway Traffic Act. Parking was easy – just park anywhere – that’s what the side-walk is for.
I found it very relaxing but was a bit disturbed to find out Greek drivers get stressed out over it. When you have no rules what is the point of worrying?
We took road trips to Corinth, Mycenae, Nafpilo, Olympia and Delphi and used the excellent public transit system to travel to Athens.
The resort was nice but it was a little past it’s prime – it was in what was described as a ‘defunct resort town’ on the internet. Food was included but was a bit bland – I suspect to appeal to an older, more conservative kind of traveller.
Swam in the seas – which gained us a few odd looks. Greeks don’t swim in October but Canadian waters never get as warm in August as they do in Greece in October.
We want to go back. The country has too much to take in with only a single visit. You can’t turn your head or take a step without seeing or touching something amazing.
I recommend it to all.
