But it has been a few years. Through another post I discovered the Bike MS rides which look like a good target.

my RAGBRAI experience this year, I decided I could totally do this. And we have a local one coming up, but it’s unfortunately about the same time as our local marathon, so I think I’ll look for one somewhere else next year. Besides, I’ll have to buy skinnier tires at minimum; maybe a different bike. So this is a “back burner” goal I’ll set my sights toward for 2009.

Had a nice 39 km ride the other day by taking a familiar route and altering it a bit to see some new scenery.

Bad weekend 17 months ago

I had planned to do a pair of medium-length (40-odd miles) rides this weekend. The weather, however, would have none of it. On Saturday it was over 100 degrees, and though I still rode, I only managed to eke out twenty miles before returning home. I completed a climbing section early in the ride that only a few weeks ago I had had to walk, but the experience on the whole was demoralizing. Considering that it took two hours afterward covered in ice packs to recover, I probably should not be so hard on myself.

Today (Sunday) was not much better. I didn’t go out to ride (it was even hotter than the day before) and 45 minutes on the stationary bike had to suffice. I can never find the same sort of stamina on the stationary bike; it’s just too boring and I usually top out at an hour.

Tomorrow it is supposed to cool down (ha!) to 80 degrees or so, so I’ll try to get a few miles in before dinner.

Another weekend, another long bike ride! This past Saturday I rode the same Santa Ana River trail, but kept on going north up PCH to Seal Beach, where I caught the San Gabriel River trail. Thirty miles and a whole lot of sweat and back pain later I was in lovely(?) Duarte. I really do need to get an odometer for these conditioning rides, but according to Google Maps and a little bit of educated guesswork, I rode about 80 miles. Getting close to my goal here. Very exciting!

I was terribly stiff afterward, and it lasted through most of Sunday, but by Monday I was back at the gym on the stationary bikes. So proud. Speaking of, I think it’s about time I headed down there again.

I went for a long ride yesterday along the Santa Ana River Trail from Yorba Linda to Huntington Beach. To get there to Yorba Linda, though, I had to ride up Cannon, which quickly became a grueling experience. It was nothing but steep, protracted climbs strung in a row for about 3.5 miles.

The trail itself was comparatively simple: almost entirely flat, except for the dips and rises required to pass under the streets that cross the river. I had a lot of trouble at first; it felt as though I was slogging through mud with each pedal-stroke. It wasn’t until I reached the end and turned on to PCH that I had been riding against the wind for the last 22 miles.

A bad start 17 months ago

I was going to go for a long bike ride this evening, but when I went to put a bit of air in the front tire the little presta valve came off with the pump. Of course I don’t have an extra tube, and of course the bike shop had closed, like, a MINUTE BEFORE. Frustrating.

I very recently (within the last few months) have discovered a passion for bicycling. I’ve had a nice road bike for a few years now, but the places I was living never really made it easy to use it regularly—no easy storage in my apartments, lack of bike lanes in the area, etc. However, now that I’ve been living at my mom’s while my own home is being renovated, I’ve spent a lot of time in the saddle and am loving it.

Last week, I read an article in the Rivendell Reader about people that have overcome long odds (Crohn’s, morbid obesity) to participate in long-distance rides and I thought to myself, “Why not me?” I’m in pretty good shape: I’m thin and have good stamina. There’s no reason I couldn’t do it with a bit of training.

I plan to participate in the Bike to Finish MS ride this October. Technically it’s not a century at 150 miles, but the last 50 are on the second day of the two-day event. So there’s my century, plus a little victory ride the next day.

I’ve got 127 days to prepare. No problem, right?

Not a priority 18 months ago

I have decided to be a serious competitive marathon runner. I can’t do this.
