How to be less judgemental of others by Marina Neira

"The more I live and see my own faults, the easier it becomes to forgive them in others."

How I did it: It took a lot of talking with friends over the course of a couple of years to be able to look past the things I was taught in Catholic school, which caused me to grow up more closed-minded that I wanted myself to be. I went from being uncomfortable around homosexual people to becoming a supporter of gay marriage, among other things.

Radical as that change may seem, it has been harder to not let other people's quirks and habits bother me. Being a perfectionist and a little controlling, I am often irked by things people do which aren't necessarily harmful or malicious. I've worked hard at taking things less personally, and this part is still a work in progress, but I like to think I'm getting there.

Lessons & tips: Look at your own faults and in what ways you annoy others before judging other people. And think, when you judge people based on your childhood values, about what those values are based on and how you would feel about those things if no one and nothing else were to influence your feelings.

    During a recent conversation with a friend over lunch, I learned that I really can listen to her discuss her conservative religious and political views without jumping in to express and attempt to justify my opposing views. This is a very big improvement for me, and I am finding it is possible to love someone despite having very different ideals and values. I need to always be aware that my beliefs are just that . . . mine, and that in no way makes them right and other people’s wrong.
