working in a locally owned and operated stationery store. working full time 5 days a week 10-6 (10-5 if I work saturday) in the custom design part of the store. it’s less money, as a base salary but has a bonus program that they’ve made every month ($500 or $1000 depending on how much over last year’s sales they did). A friend’s girlfriend used to work there and loved it. so here are pros and cons:
current job pros:
good money + some bonus potential
20 paid days off a year plus holidays
good benefits
like my new boss and most of the people i work with
lots of growth opportunity
clothing discount
current job cons:
-don’t get along with another one of the managers, ANGERS me to no end, i don’t think there’s any chance of that person quitting soon
-hours suck, working 40-70 hours a week, late nights early mornings, no stability in schedule
-responsible for 25 people who don’t give a shit about their job
-stress, stress, stress (needless stress, which is all the more stressful)
-corporate bullshit
-xmas and everything that goes along with it when working at a mall
-spend too much $$$ shopping on my breaks
new job pros:
-better hours
-no nights, no sundays (Hubby has off sundays, so we’d always have 1 day together a week. we barely ever have that now and stay up waaaay late on work nights so we can hang out.)
-no major holidays
-same commute time, but much better scenery
-locally owned and independent (they work in the store alongside us)
-get to be creative
-i get to be an etiquette geek all day
-gives me experience editing copy (for future career after school maybe)
-gives me flexibility to take night classes to finish school or work nights to make up for pay cut
new job cons:
-$3.50 less an hour, but better bonus potential
-health benefits decent but not as good
-completely new territory and it will take a long time to learn everything (there’s no formal training, all hands-on)
-only get 1 weeks paid vacation after 12 months of service (but 5 personal days for the first year after to be used)
-have to deal with brides and bitchy people that live in our affluent, upper-middle class suburb who think their money is greener than everyone else’s (I already deal with a lot of these people at my store, so I’m fairly used to it, but this will be dealing with them on a whole new level)
I told her I’d let her know by tomorrow. My work would be completely blind-sided if I gave notice. I think my new boss would cry, maybe? She has so much going on, she’s only been there a month.
But it comes down to, what’s best for me, right? I have no idea. Completely 50/50 about it.
