Seriously, this is probably the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. I’ve never worked so hard to be good at something, and I’ve never loved something this much.
How to play Roller Derby
How I did it: First I had to learn to skate, which means I had to take classes with the kiddies every Saturday morning. Then the rollergirls let me come to training with them, and learn basic stuff like falls and endurance. The league was just starting up, but I fell in love.
We had an exhibition bout in January of 2009, and my team lost. We decided we weren't ready, and had our first real bout in permenant teams on August 22nd, where I disloacted my knee. I'm doing physio and should be back in time for our next full season, 2010!
Lessons & tips: - Stalk your local rollergirls. They probably have a website, and you can email them and find out what you need before trying out for fresh meat. All teams will need you to have:
- Protective gear (helmet, mouth guard, knee, elbow and wrist padding.)
- Quad skates (blades are a no-no)
- Basic skating skills
If you like blading or are a boy, never fear, you could always be a ref, MC or other bout official. Your local rollergirls would probably love you and your services!!!
