leaving Ann Arbor in just 2 weeks from today. In Berlin by 2010, yay!!!
How I did it: I chose to put quality of life and life experience before my career for once. A good choice indeed. I will continue to do so forever more.
In hindsight perhaps I would have been better in Munich as I love old architecture - and Berlin really is, still a bit of a sprawly mess from one perspective. But renting is alot cheaper in Berlin and therefore I could sustain living here longer.
Lessons & tips: About 99% (speaking generally) of the German people that I interacted with on a daily basis (in shops, cafes, on subways) never smile, and unfortunately appear very miserable. This is probably just cultural though - as it is the norm in Berlin.
I guess Germans visiting Sydney may think the people there are all on happy pills! - Cultural again. Neither behaviour is right nor wrong. Just my observation.
That said, a few of the German people that I have met and have become life long friends hopefully with are so lovely. :)
Tip: Do not think that you will find work easily in Berlin. You will not. (That sounds so pessimistic, but it is in fact very realistic).

I lived in Berlin for about 10 months back in 1993 because of my husband’s job. What a great opportunity! The wall had come down in 1989, but parts were still up and there was lots of new construction (not more wall, just cool buildings). My absolutely favorite building is Mies van der Rohe’s National Gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie) built in 1968….a must see! We lived there when one of Hitler’s underground hideouts was discovered and parts of the S-bahn were just re-opening with circa 1960 grafitti…very cool. I still have a wonderful friend that I made when I was there and I hope to get back to visit.

So, yesterday I have found out that one of my favourite paintings, Caravaggio’s Incredulity of Saint Thomas (which I use for my desktop background) is in Sanssouci Palace! It’s funny that I have been there in 2005 and I missed it. So here is another good reason to go back.
Well, the title says it all! Lol.
But am planning on moving there in July, to work as a Graphic Designer, and am worried about living and working aspects, with little knowledge of German. Umph.
