i got the mail today, and in it was my certification from power pilates! i am now an official certified power pilates beginning mat instructor! i’m stoked!
How to become a pilates instructor
How I did it: After practicing the Gaiam Beginner mat video for many years, and even going on to the intermediate mat video, i decided to look around town for local pilates studios. I found one, and took a few classes and talked to the owner about getting certified. Turned out, she was having a certification course really soon, so I took some more mat classes there and then signed up for the teacher certification weekend.
The weekend was a lot of fun. We got a lot of practice teaching the exersizes. We learned the way that Power Pilates specifically does things and why, so that was good. I like that Power Pilates gets people moving and doesn't focus too hard on staying in perfect shape the whole time. Get moving, and the muscles will strengthen, and you'll be able to better hold yourself in place... that's their stance on that. Which, really stands to reason.
So, the weekend went great. Waiting to hear if I was certified was not so fun, but when I got the mail, I was pleased so see my certificate!
Lessons & tips: I think the Gaiam beginner mat workout video w/ Ana Caban is an excellent place to start. It takes you thru most of the basic moves, gives modifications, and is still a workout.
Next, just look around town for local studios, and then talk to the owners.

is killing me!!!
at least in the mean time i am able to practice on some of my friends and my roommate… but i’d really like to know already!
i went thru the 3-day weekend beginner mat teacher certification course! i went thru Power Pilates, seemed logical as they are the parent of the studio in town, so no need to travel. and i’d taken some classes there, the people were all very nice! the instructor will send our evaluations to NY and in about a month i should get a letter either with my teaching certificate or telling me i need to re-test.
i enjoyed the class! it was a very small group so i didn’t feel like a tiny fish in a big pond. just 5 of us and the instructor.
i would have liked, however, to spend more time teaching each excersize until i felt comfortable enough to move on. we kinda did everything pretty quick.
i’m glad i chose Power Pilates tho becuase they are less clinical and more workout oriented. i was listening to a few of the differences between Power and Stott Pilates and Stott students had to know a lot more anatomy. Power people need to know basics and be able to understand if a client comes in w/ an injury or surgery, but we are not doctors and it is not a physical therapy. it’s a workout so Power people get the clients moving right away.
i hope i get my certificate. i know the material. i think the gaiam beginner mat video really did a great job preparing me for teaching. as silly as the instructor sounds, i hear her in my head and find myself using her words.
i just hated knowing i was being evaluated over the entire weekend. made me nervous. i know with a client, i’ll be ok, i know i know the material and the client isn’t there to test me. but with the instructor there i got nervous and tongue-tied. test anxiety.
i guess in the mean time i’ll practice on my roommate. if she ever lets me…
wow, i just realized, if i get my certificate, i’ll be able to move this goal to the “i did it” list! haha, wow, how odd will that feel??? :D
so, i start the teacher certification today. after sunday, i hope to be a certified pilates beginner mat instructor!! woo hoo!
The weekend has finally come! I’ve faxed in and paid for my certification registration this morning! After Sunday I will be certified to teach a beginning mat class! I’m stoked!

have signed up for fitness instruction course, on my way to pilates instruction classes. need to actually take some pilates courses now, but work getting on the way….
Ok, so I’ve given up on my roommate who has been slacking really about about doing Pilates w/ me. Last week tho, I called up a studio and registered myself for 10 classes: 5 mat classes and 5 tower classes. Thursday was my first mat class and I enjoyed it very much. Monday I took a 2nd mat class and yesterday I took my very first tower class. I am liking it all very much. I like the instructors, I like the studio, I like the other students (of which there aren’t many which is another thing I like). I even talked to the owner of the studio about getting certified and she told me she’s holding a certification course in April! I told her I very much want to do that, and asked what would be required. She told me to check out the Power Pilates website which is where she was certified from. So I have to buy a book, log any videos I do at home and continue coming to her classes and I could probably do it. I’m so stoked! I’m glad this studio is in town and that I don’t have to travel outside the state or anything. I find myself looking forward to going to these classes, and it doesn’t feel like a chore at all! However, I do need to start my elliptical routine back up because I can’t build muscle and just push all my fat to the surface, that’s no good. I gotta make it a point maybe to come home from the class and immediately get on the elliptical. :D Regardless, I’m on my way and I’m so excited!
i’m going to take my first formal pilates class… i’m excited and nervous. i hate working out in front of people but it’s a requirement for teaching so i need to get over it.
so the 2nd challenge is proving to be harder than the first for some reason. i don’t know if it’s because we changed workout videos or what but we need to get back into the swing of things! i think the chaotic schedules have had something to do with it but i need to make it more of a priority!
so, my roommate and i started our 2nd 30-day challenge last night. last weekend we had audited a good number of my videos that we might be able to do and we liked the one with the resistance band but i only had one band that had come w/ my windsor set. so at walmart monday i found a video that has 5 10-minute workouts and included 2 resistance bands. we audited that while i straightened up the house for company. we both liked it and agreed that we would include that video in our 2nd challenge.
well last night we started w/ that video and boy, i just know that this is going to bring results. she said she definitely saw changes in her body from the 1st challenge (probably the pilates along with the walking to/from the bus stop and around campus). and she has lost 10 lbs. but she saw results and it’s instantly motivating for her. i saw less drastic results… :( but this video will probably kick my ass! i’m looking forward to it!
