I am currently living in Alaska and working near Denali National Park at McKinley Creek side Cabbins. A coworker toldme that we are only a few hours away so we are planning a overnight trip to the bus on this Wed to Thursday, we will pack for everything, I am bringing a handgun just in case, rope and pretty much everything else I can think of I will repost the results.

Question 17 months ago

Has anyone done the trek to the bus? If so, could someone tell me how they went about planning it?

I’ve read the book, and am watching the movie and I just don’t know what it is, but at this point in time, I am in the same place that Chris was at with the world, and its drawing me in. I need to do this.

Any help anyone could give would be appreciated! Thanks!

I found “Into the Wild” the book just this year when a friend handed it to me to read. (I know I missed the bandwagon, the movie did not excite me)

I haven’t finished it yet but Chris’ story had changed me and I want to see the Magic Bus for myself. Watching Videos on youtube you can see that there is things that are still there that belonged to Chris.

Looking at the videos I found out that someone sold things from the bus on Ebay. How could anyone do that? And what does the family say?

Anyways I hope that is it still there when I get the chance to see it. And I hope all the things that have been taken get returned.

I read Into the Wild last year, and it had a profound impact on me. I really admire Chris McCandless, and since reading this book, I have made it one of my goals in life to get to Fairbanks 142. I went on an Alaskan cruise last month and spent 2 days in Anchorage afterwards. My family and I went to Denali for a day trip, and I was really excited about the possibility of getting to see the bus. Unfortunately, my mom found an article about it in a guidebook and found out that it is a 12-hour hike to reach the bus. Since I was the only one who knew anything about it or had any interest, we didn’t end up going to see the bus. I was within 15 miles of it, which makes it pretty disappointing that I didn’t get to actually go see it. But I definitely plan to go back someday, since I loved Alaska in general, and I want to find a few friends who share my interest in visiting bus 142 and make the trip out there to see it and maybe camp in it for a night.

I have heard that they are considering removing the bus to stop “crazy people” like us from going out to see it. I really hope that doesn’t happen. The bus should be allowed to remain there, both to continue serving its original purpose and for admirers of Chris McCandless and Into the Wild to visit.

The Bus 18 months ago

I’ve seen the movie, and it’s amazing how a person can reflect feelings that have been stirring in me for so long. The movie itself was very well done, and did exactly what movies were made to do: evoke and inspire. I want to sell everything I have and live life in a rather animalistic way. I think everyone has had enough of society, but I’d like to act upon it.
