Gratitude, not attitude, is what I say to my kids and mumble to myself whenever the lack of expendable cash becomes problematic. Which is..pretty much….. always:) And with the holidays approaching and the yearly onslaught of catalogs arriving, the chorus of Iwantgottahavepleasebuyme begins.
Mommy’s broke this year, I explain.
We’ll fix you, my 6 yr old offers.
To offset the eventual disappointment-they’re not getting everything on their lists, no matter how nicely they ask-I figured seeing how some kids do without necessities-like winter apparel-might make my own kids more appreciative of what they have, and what they get.
Life is perspective.
To that end, Cold Hands, Warm Hearts was born.
We are going to collect gloves for poor kids and donate them to shelters in the south bronx.A lifetime ago I taught in that area and my students’s fingers were always raw in the wintertime.
Hopefully, my own children will be able to see that helping others is the best gift of all.
