I am in a play, and I am supposed to have a Minnesota accent. What the heck is that. I mean i have heard people from Minnesota and I think they sound like me. I grew up the UP of Michigan, so I hear that I talk a little funny. LIke a Canadian. Anyways, I would like to know about this.

I’ve never thought I had an accent, though I will admit I say “uffda.” That’s only cuz my parents do it. I dunno how to go about picking up an accent but by golly I’ll do it.
What enrages me is when my Minnesotan friends say “soda.” WHAT THE HELL IS SODA?

My father (passed away when I was 19) was born and bred in this great state. We always spent our summer vacations there, usually at a resort (on a lake) or a log cabin (on a lake).. Even though we lived in Utah (desert) My Minnesotan father insisted on owning a bass boat, so we could take it up there.. I remember driving through Iowa (after we moved to Arkansas) and I’d be asleep all night in the car, then my parents would wake me up to tell me we’d stopped at a restraunt for breakfast… I knew we’d crossed the border as soon as the waitress came and started talking.. AH! THat delightful accent.. I’d love to have it! I have two aunts with it, but my father had lost his before I was born (had spent many years in CA).. Anyway.. I love Minnesota, so many wonderful memories.. Still got an uncle and aunt in Bemidji (where dad was raised) and another aunt near the twin cities..
hope to visit this spring..
Do I want your accent?? Ya youbetcha!!
Oh.. another one of my favorite memories (before I went vegetarian) is sitting with dad sharing a jar of pickled herring and saltine crackers! LOL..

I’m a Pittsburgher and have been a Pittsburgher all my life (Go Pens!), and over the past few months I’ve had something very strange be said to me. Muliple people have brought to my attention that I have a Minnesotan accent! I really didn’t think so at first, but upon paying more attention to how I speak I do toss in a few long Os every once in awhile. How very odd! I’ve never even been to Minnesota. But, hey, everybody who’s noticed it has also said that they like it. :)

Okay, so I have a Minnesota accent (born and raised)...and it’s awesome. But then you have to get the whole Minnesota culture thing down. You have to love to eat casseroles at least twice a week, set out coffee and bars for your guests, have pickled herring at your Christmas dinner table- even though the only person that eats it is Grandma, and drink pop, not soda.

Minnesotan accents are great! (I’m a native… so I have an accent whether I like it or not)
You just need to learn how to say “boat” and “Minnesota” with long O’s… add in an “uff da” once in a while (ok, no one really says that)... say “spendy” instead of “expensive”, call the game Duck Duck Gray Duck instead of Duck Duck Goose, and say “pop” instead of soda/coke/whatever…then you’re good to go :-)
