This is one of the best things I have ever done. It took a lot of planning, but was totally worth it. I am so happy here!

How I did it: Made friends who offered to let me stay for a while to get on my feet for free, packed everything in my car and drove for 3 days. Once I arrived I found a job, a church, and jumped right in. Read how I did it…

In 2005, I became tired of the rat race that exists in Washington, DC. It was work, work, work and knowing people through business cards. I didn’t want to burn out and didn’t want my life defined by my résumé.
After visiting FindMySpot.com where I learned that my ideal city/environment may exist in Portland, OR, I visited the city for a week. I absolutely loved it. I started saving money and visited the city another time just to make sure I was making the right decision.
I shipped my things across the country and followed on a one-way flight about a week later in April, 2006.
Despite a few informational interviews, real interviews and other job leads, I ended up moving to Portland without a full-time job. I worked for a temp agency for about 6 1/2 months until I found a full-time position.
I’ve been in Portland for just over a year now and have learned a great deal about myself and other people — from prospective employers to roommates to random people on the street. For each less-than-great and/or downright bad experience I’ve had, there are at least five awesome stories I can share since moving here.
So, if you’re thinking of moving…anywhere, really, be sure to do your research, visit a few times and save up money in the event you’re under-employed for a bit.
In the end, I have no regrets about my move.
Well, I grew up in Ohio. Moved to Florida for 2 years, back to Ohio for 2 years, Florida again for 2 years, Arkansas for 3 months, California for 4 years, Ohio for almost 4 years again, Vermont for 3 months….and tomorrow I’m leaving for California again. This is it for me. I’m staying in Cali for good. I’ve met some AMAZING people and don’t regret any of the moves.
It all started when me and a friend (and my chihuahua mix) drove from my hometown in the San Francisco Bay Area to New Jersey… I moved down to Charlottesville, VA, then to Orlando, FL, then to Savannah, GA, and now… I’m on my way home! Back across the country… here I come :-) This is WORTH DOING.
