My laptop overheats. I opened it up and cleaned the fan but that didn’t work. So now I’ve bought some thermal paste and I’m going to apply it to the heat sink. I’ve ordered some canned air to clean the fan too.

I was having a few problems with my 5-year-old iBook for the past month. The battery wasn’t charging properly and it would just randomly shut off.
At first I thought it was the charger because it was pretty old and some wires were frayed, so I spent $30 on a new charger. No luck. I knew it was something having to do with the power supply.
I called up Apple to see if they could fix it. The rep almost scoffed at the fact that I still had my iBook and, that despite the fact it didn’t charge properly, was functioning fine. He then tried to push me into buying a new laptop instead of giving me the information I originally requested. I got off the phone with Apple annoyed.
I then did a bit of research on iBook service parts. Turns out the part that the A/C charger plugs into was notorious for going bad in iBooks. It also was not soldered onto the logic board and could be replaced!!
I ordered the part as quickly as I could ($50) and waited patiently for it to come in the mail.
I have never repaired a laptop before, but using a pdf guide I found on www.powerbookmedic.com, it took me approximately an hour to open up my laptop, replace the part and put it all back together. It was very easy and comprehensive.
Now my laptop works beautifully.
