I will have to do this when my kids get out of school. My nephew will be about 3 months old by that time. 13 months ago
My sister gave birth last Thursday, 4.5 weeks early. My afghan for the baby (boy) is not done yet. But, it is double the length of what is in my last post. I have probably another 3 hrs of length to work on and then I need to figure out how to do the edging.
I messed up at the very beginning and cannot undo. An advanced crocheter woman at my church said to do the same scalloped stuff using the Catherine’s wheel all the way around, so you can never tell I messed up. Then, I think I will probably finish with 1-2 rows each of a single stitch of each color or maybe I’ll just do it of 2 of the colors. Not sure.
Not sure if I will have enough yarn to do all that. We’ll see.
I have more 40% off Michael’s & Hobby Lobby coupons to use, if not, but I don’t want to end up with 4 skeins of yarn like 1/4 used.
Anyway, my new little nephew has a ton of hair. However, he’s been in the hospital since birth because his bilirubin (sp?) is too high (jaundice). Hopefully he can come home with his mommy and daddy today.
I can’t wait to make them a meal or two, hold my little nephew again.
My little 8-yr old boy, that was his first time holding a baby and he was so nervous. My little 11-yr old girl is a total pro at holding babies.
So exciting. I’m so happy for my sis and her hubby. They’ve tried for 8 yrs and now finally have a baby. Praise God!!! 15 months ago
I’ve basically doubled what I did yesterday. It was tiring. 15 months ago
This is what I ended up with late last night. Each full wheel row which really is comprised of a bottom and top row (2 rows) takes me about 40 min., if I’m not interrupted or have issues or get distracted with other things.
There are 36 full wheel rows (9 of each color). The top and bottom are 1/2 wheel row of blue. 15 months ago
This is the pattern of the Catherine’s Wheel. The only stitches for this afghan are SC (single crochet), double crochet, chains, and this other type of double crochets. 15 months ago
Yesterday while going through patterns on the internet, free ones, and then YouTube, I found a pattern that was not exactly easy, but looked really nice that I could possibly make for my sister’s baby that is due in about 5 weeks.
I found a tutorial on this by Mikeyssmail, which is pretty good, and I found someone that made a baby afghan from his tutorial using 3 colors for a baby boy, which are close to the colors I was thinking about.
My sister’s theme is more dealing with animals in blue, green, yellow and brown. It seems there are a lot of baby stuff with brown, whether boy or girl.
Anyway, I’m using Caron’s Simply Soft yarn. Praise be to God that my daughter found coupons for Michael’s and Hobby Lobby for me that were 40% of 1 regular item.
The colors I am using is a soft blue, soft green, chocolate, and sunshine. I did 2 patterns on Excel with the colors to see how I wanted the colors ordered.
The woman who did the baby afghan used 36 rows of wheels. Since I have 4 colors, each color will get 9 rows. The order will be blue, green, brown, yellow. The blue will be half rows on both ends.
I haven’t completely decided on the edging yet, but I have a ways to go before I decide and can play with those colors some.
The hardest part was starting the half row and the 1 row that followed. After that, I started to get how the pattern was going. Unfortunately I messed up at the beginning and made it a little too long. Not sure how to correct this. Not ripping this out.
Not quite sure how long it takes for me to do one row, which really is comprised of 2 rows because it takes 2 rows to complete the wheel as each row only has half the wheel.
Tonight I will finish 2 wheel rows of each color, which is pretty good. Tomorrow if I can get 3-4 rows of each wheel color done, that would put me more than half way through.
I would love to be able to give this to my sister and her husband not this weekend, but the weekend after when all of my family will be here (well, most of it).
My son and I went to both Michael’s & Hobby Lobby’s today to get 1 skein of yarn each at those places. Hobby Lobby was 20 cents more for the same skein, but was right across the street from Michael’s. Total for the 4 skeins was $11.46.
Hopefully I won’t need more than these 4 skeins, but if I do, I have more coupons. It ends up being about $2.87 total per skein, which I think is a good deal.
When it goes on sale, it’s still not this inexpensive, so I was happy it was not on sale, as the coupons cannot be used for sale items.
Without the edgings, it is 24” wide. By the time I have all the 36 wheel rows, it should be around 32” long. The border might extend it to 25” x 33”, not sure.
Hopefully I’ll have pictures along the way.
