I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with several of the UK’s foremost Extreme Programmers and now count myself as an experienced XPer and occasional coach.
The practice is really just a set of guidelines that form a starting point. To really make XP work you need to constantly reanalyse your own working attitude and environment.
The most striking difference in approach to any other methodology that I know of is the realisation that human needs should be fulfilled as well as business requirements.
The difference it makes to working life cannot be understated. Having worked for many companies that abuse their programming staff, it was a breath of fresh air to be coached in XP.
