Though the cost of going solar is prohibitive, one thing that is probably within my grasp is a solar water heater. I’m not sure that I could get the proper South facing (30-degree) angle on my East-West roof, but the payoff for installing this is typically about 3 years. For a more accurate figure, go to FindSolar’s calculator, but realize that the Federal tax incentives are set to expire at the end of 2007, so look into the existing rules. Realize that installing a solar water heater doesn’t mean getting rid of the electric heater. You keep that as a back-up.
