Saw a preview performance of this in the West End tonight – loved it! It really picked up after the first half hour or so of introduction and the early songs which I wasn’t familiar with. The music of course was fabulous – at the end, everyone was on their feet bopping away to Oh What A Night. And I never knew that Can’t Take My Eyes Off You (one of my favourite songs) was originally sung by Frankie Valli – I only knew the Andy Williams version).
I think that was the first musical I’ve seen that had so many set changes, with stagehands and the actors whipping away tables and chairs every 10 minutes or so as the storyline moved through clubs and recording studios. It was a little distracting, but on the other hand, it showed how hard it was to climb to the top and stay there.
