How I did it: I mean, lets be honest here without preaching. One word: Netlfix.
A close second is streaming movies from my iTunes to my Apple TVs. I gotta hand it to Apple for making this stuff ridiculously simple to setup and run.
I have an impressive internet speed, current computers (Mac AND PC for both types of haters out there!), Apple TVs on all my entertainment centers, a home theater powered by a PS3, and an iPad2 for watching around the house. It was easy as pie to simply stop watching commercialized television and get all my entertainment through Netflix. My newest TV even has built in Netflix streaming.
Ironically enough one of the movies I enjoyed the most, Indie Game: The Movie, I watched through Steam! http://store.steampowered.com/video/207080
This has been such a raging success that I may even try the trial of Hulu Plus to help my wife give up her shows that are not on Netflix. From my standpoint, I could honestly give up monthly cable for good.
Downside to all this for discussion: When I sit back and look at all it took me to accomplish this goal, there sure is an absurd amount of money tied up in all this technology I use daily to watch these films on a whim anywhere in my home. Not that I would change a thing if given the opportunity to rewind my life. I love my tech!
