This takes no planning unless you live in a concrete jungle. Then you will have to find a park or lawn somewhere.
All it takes is remember that this moment is all you have, purposely slowing down and enjoying it.
You might want to have a blanket or lay a jacket on the ground under your torso, but other than that, it is only a matter of being aware, being in the moment, and taking the opportunity that the night sky presents. If you want to see a lot of stars, and you are in the city, you might want to find a place in the country to do your star-gazing.

star gazing
I’m lucky enough to live in the country, so city lights don’t interfere with my star gazing. It’s amazing to lay in the back yard and watch the stars and meteors and ponder how insignificant we actually are in the big scheme of things.

Good memories. A field, a tennis court, the hood of a car. Stars are pretty.

I went out the other night and spent time laying in a field, listening to wonderful space post-rock and counting the flying stars (only saw two, but so many satellites I didn’t even count them). I felt a bit strange at first, because I could hear nothing but my music, but when more and more stars appeared I started feeling like in home again.
Before this night, the last time I did this was in winter… It was -20 ˚C cold (I don’t know it in fahrenheits, but it maybe tells a lot if I just say that I was wearing 26 different items of clothing the same time, and still I had to leave early because I was freezing!).

I did this with two friends at Ghost Ranch in the middle of New Mexican nowhere. The view was amazing. I’ve never seen the sky like that before. It was all I hoped it would be.

I’ve actually done this several times in real honest-to-goodness fields...football fields, open fields, parks. I did this last night as well, except substitute field for rooftop garden and substitue stars for light-polluted-and-cloud-filled-New-York-sky. It was still nice though.

I did this with a male friend and as we were climbing out of the field with hay in our hair and looking somewhat dishevelled, me ran into a woman walking down the street. needless to say, she gave us quite an odd look.

Awhile ago, I crashed out on the front lawn of my college with my then-boyfriend and a few friends. We all pretended we were falling into the sky and had to hold on to the grass for dear life. It was AWESOME.
