Focus on listening

I have a long commute by car and thus a lengthy menu of podcasts that keeps me sane, including newscasts in French and Spanish. I can understand all of the French and some of the Spanish if and only if they have my full attention; I can’t process either language fast enough to half-listen. I think, after a year of this regimen, that I’m getting better at focusing. It definitely makes me notice when I get distracted (sometimes for reasonable stuff, like traffic!).

on Ask MetaFilter. I don’t think the particular pattern described here is my main problem, but still helpful.
