New letter! 18 months ago

I wrote them a new letter this evening, but I don’t have ink for my printer! Foiled!

That’s easy enough to fix…

Oh, and when I was reading my letter aloud to my mom, she reminded me that the extra $100 had come in on a 1099-Revised. It’s not like I was missing a number or a form; my brokerage hadn’t provided it yet! Luckily all the new forms will be coming to my house from now on, but arg!

No good deed goes unpunished... 18 months ago

Of course not.

So, when I sent off my new returns, the IRS was perfectly happy to take my money and not charge me interest. New York State? Not so much… They apparently saw a windfall and wanted to take me for all I had. I got a letter from them after my vacation asking for $46 more than I’d already sent them, with that $10 that TurboTax had calculated as my entire bill just a down payment—there’s literally a line item that reads “late fee = $10”. Their accounting would push my effective tax rate on that $100 up to 71%. I’ve dithered about it, but today I called my mom and she said I should write them a letter disagreeing with their findings. So I need to do that. Soon.

Bah.

I’m tempted to just pay it so I don’t have to write them and go through that whole hassle, but it is unfair. They didn’t catch my extra $100—I did and I was honest about it and dutifully jumped through the right hoops. It’s not like I took that $100 and could actually spend it. It’s locked up in my IRA account.

I’m annoyed.

Out the door... 20 months ago

This morning, I stopped off at the post office on the way to class and I dropped off my federal + state taxes. I feel much better now that I don’t have tax forms sitting patiently on my desk.

Thank you everyone who sympathised with me this week! I’m done!

Ready to go! 20 months ago

I finished ‘em off tonight, and they’re ready to go! I have to get to the post office this weekend, so I’ll take them along with me and make sure that they actually get where they’re going…

In fact, out of all of my recent banking adventures, all that’s left is for me to transfer the last of my bills to the new number and get a form notarised. None of it was really very tough, just painful.

All I need... 20 months ago

to finish them off is a cover letter to the feds and the state. It took me two hours to find the right boxes in TurboTax, but now I’m done with that part of everything. I owe a whopping $15 to the IRS and a whole $10 to NYS. I’m annoyed by the whole thing, but I’m glad I’m being honest and just knuckling down to do this. I have a bunch of things that need to leave the house on Saturday, and I want my revised taxes to be among them!

After I finished these off, I sewed together afghan squares while I was waiting for everything to print. It was really relaxing and put me in a much better frame of mind…

Apparently... 20 months ago

I haven’t finished them! I did mine in February, but a bunch of people sent my mom my forms, and she didn’t find them until recently. I’m not sure what I have to do to make everything right, but I have a pile of junk on my desk that’s not going away until I do this… Grrr.

What is with this month and the enormous banking errors? Last week my credit card was hacked [they called me when the poopyheads tried to charge 10k in jewelry], I left my debit/CC at a restaurant and had to cancel it and get a new one, and then there’s my other brilliant goal. Of course, it’s not “gang up on Mary week”, since most of these are my fault, it’s just the whole pile-up has me a bit twitchy…
