This has been a crazy album experience. I hope to release the new Maktub record this summer. It’s mixed. Next up mastering and a release strategy … which may be the classic “free download” strategy employed by wealthy musicians worldwide. Wish us luck!

When I think back to the 3 day recording session in May of 2008 that laid the groundwork for this album, it’s amazing to me where the whole project has gone. After those days I was pretty sure we wouldn’t have enough material for an album. At this point we’ve got 10 complete songs, which an album makes.
All the vocals are done, the drums, the bass, 90% of the keys, 90% of the guitars. It’s really just a matter of a few touch ups, then the somewhat tedious but exciting process of mixing the album. The album is roughly mixed at this point so we’re closer than I’ve been on past albums.
My guess is we’ll wrap this project up by March of 2009, then I just have to rally the troops for a release.

With ghe initial recording session nearly 2 months behind me, I’m still working regularly on these tracks with Cozzi. Last week we laid down some acoustic piano (conveniently they have a mid-size Yamaha grand piano in the studio). Thaddeus laid some guitar tracks. It’s definitely a different approach, taking this much time to complete an album, but so far it’s sounding pretty promising.
My estimate is now 9 to 12 months from beginning to end of recording. Whoa.
Davis is setting up his drums as I type—it usually take a good 4 or 5 hours to get drum tones. I’ll bring my keyboard rig over tomorrow and get that set up. Thaddeus is bringing his guitars and pedalboard over this week so we should be good to go.
Kevin (bass) arrives tomorrow and Reggie (singer) arrives Friday morning. We plan to record Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday … take a break then do any necessary overdubs. I’m partly terrified because we don’t have any material together. In the past it has worked itself out (in fact, that’s when we’re at our best) but I can’t help thinking there will be a day when the well runs dry.
The studio we’re recording in is sweet—just down the street from my house. Kevin & Reggie are staying at my place and we’ll walk down.
Rounded up the fellas for some recording in May at my friend Michael’s joint. Should be pretty sweet. I have no idea if we’ll get an entire album out of it but that is the plan. Next up:
- write tunes
- record tunes
- mix tunes
- hope for the best
