I’m 14 and living in an English countryside. I have two German friends, who speak german and one German speaking Australian friend.
I’ve forever been interested, but my school doesn’t teach it, and there are no German schools.
I’d love to teach myself and I know quite a few words and phrases already.
I would love to go to Germany sometime, too.
So, my goal is to teach myself German. I’m confident I’ll do well.

In your case, fella, it would be worth it. But in my experience, it isn’t. I took 4 years of German in high school and followed that up with a month-long trip to Germany/Austria/Switzerland, and half the time I was greeted in English.
Prague is awesome, though. My favorite place on the planet. The bridges are amazing.

I used to go out with a highly intelligent and beautiful Austrian girl. She spoke several languages but when I went to meet her family she had to translate for us. I figured I couldn’t make myself more beautiful, but I could increase my intellect. Since then I’ve taught myself some basic German but don’t seem to find the time to stick to it as I should.
